Lipstick on a pig? The ugly 8N 3 weeks later (pics)

Well not quite lipstick on a pig.
It did get the new front axle pin it badly needed, the radius rods
straightened, the carb and distributor rebuilt and a few other
repairs along the way. Runs good and looks much better!

Very nice Royse, I like the red, you could comb
your hair in it. Was that tin as good a shape as
it looked in the before? Is it a keeper?

I like it. I would be proud to have it parked in
my front yard! I am doing a similar operation on a
9N that I bought for parts. It is too good to part
out. So I took of the parts I wanted and I am
slowly fixing it up. Today I swapped engines. Next
spring I will get around to cleaning it up.

L.B, the hood was in pretty good shape. One rust spot on the
lower rail of the other side and a small dent on the front.
Both fenders are solid but one has been crinkled pretty bad.
I will probably sell it to someone who wants to plow their driveway
and put the money in the tractor fund for the next one. :)

Sure thing BI, "some assembly required" of course!
The worst part of this one was the cleaning.
It had been repainted before and they painted over the crud
that had been there since who knows when. 1949 maybe.

She sang:

Hey Bulldog, I haven't 8N in a while
My you're a handsome machine!
Let's make hay while the N shines
No lipstick, keep it clean

There really wasn't much left to strip on the tin, so it was all
stripped bare. Pretty much the same with the cast too but I didn't
media blast it, just took off everything stripper, a wire wheel and
a pressure washer could get and then primed the whole thing.

To replace the king pin and bushing how far did you have to disassemble it? I have an 8N that has a really worn king pin, it's breaking the lower nipple in the distributor cap and the steering link is bumping the generator and keeps loosing my fan belt. Also the right radius arm is bent.

Thanks

In a rust free world, a guy could probably just remove the grill
to remove the pin, then remove the distributor to slide the axle
out the side.
I've always taken the sheet metal and radiator off, it makes it
much easier to see what you're doing and get the spacers in.
I separate the outer parts of the axle from the center portion,
which makes it much lighter and easier to handle.

Yes, the white arrows are what I'm talking about.
On an 8N the radius rods have to come off too.
The steering tie rods do not have to come off,
just be careful not to bend them when you lay the
outer parts with tires and hubs out to the side.

LOL Well at least you're not in a hurry TerryB!

Thank you all for the compliments. Its a great hobby.
Joan and I have fun working on them together.
I'd never get them done that quickly if she didn't help
with the cleaning, taping, painting etc.
