Is 6V started robbing amps from ignition?

No

But it's possible that the starter is dragging, you have a weak battery in the tractor, poor grounds/connections......etc, etc.

Start w/ the simple stuff.

Make sure the battery in the tractor is fully charged, (see tip # 49)

Then, check for spark when you are trying to start the tractor. If you don’t own a spark checker w/ an adjustable gap, buy one. In the meantime, an old spark plug w/ the gap opened to at least ¼” will work. Ground it to a rust & paint free spot on the engine turn the key on & look for a spark.

Post back w/ results.

bob.......are you asking iff'n yer original 6-volt starter motor is robbing the necessary power to run the ignition from yer 12-volt battery??? I doubt it.

A SECRET cause of weak sparkies and hard starting is the weak sister ignition switch. I replaced mine 3-times in one summer of brush-hoggin'. I got grypped and installed a 25-amp WATERPROOF marine grade toggle switch. Keys....who needs'em?

I understand the weird 1-terminal 4-nipple squarecan ignition coil. It needs the MANDATORY "infamous" ballast resistor, NO ARGUE!!! Since it don't look like the common roundcan ignition coil with the center tower, the squarecan coil MUST be the problem; so change everything inna shotgun fixxem approach.

New wires, eh? Make certain they are the OLD fashioned COPPER core, 'stedda modern string core sparkie wires. Firing order is 1,2,4,3 CCW. 1 is next to radiator. The 4-nipple cap is engraved. Cut the copper core wires to length and ty-wrap them together. Don't try to feed'em thru the original wire tube.

Heres the deal, 6 or 12-volts, the squarecan dizzy is designed to be removed and have the points (0.015") set on the kitchen table. Just un-snapple the capple and remove the 2-bolts and walk to the kitchen. Install yer NEW points (0.015") and set the timing to 1/4" per the I&T FO-4 manual.

Remember to "polish" the invisible contaminates from between the points after installation with a piece of paper match cover ...or... torn strip from HEAVY brown paper grocery sack.

Now finger start the 2-bolts and install the rotor. Rotate the rotor until the dizzy tang falls into the slot of the camshaft. Now tighten the 2-bolts and re-snapple yer capple. Simple, eh? Since the dizzy is installed with 2-bolts, you can NOT install outta time. Sucha deal, eh?

While the 9N came with Champion H-10 sparkies, we recommend AutoLite 437's gapped 0.025".

One of the BIGGEST problems noobies have with the weird 4-nipple dizzy is FLOODING their sparkies. Once FLOODED ya gotta replace'em with clean DRY sparkies. Don't throw yer FLOODED sparkies away, just clean'n'dry them, one-atta-time in HOT running engine. And save'em fer the NEXT time. (and there will be a next)

And keep yer ittchy-twitchy fingers off'n them handy-dandy carb tweek'um. One of the FIRST things a noobie does when having running problems is to tweek the carb adjusts 'stedda fixin' the IGNITION. So man-up iff'n yew tweeked them carb adjusters and we'll give you instructions on how to adjust yer carb. ......sparkle Dell

checkt he bat charge level, cable ends and grounds.

no reason you should have problems starting on 12v with a new battery.

After two years of messing with this girl I found problem. and no were did anyone say anything about this.
The coil mounts on top of distributor and has a pig tail which connects to points the other connect has a tab which connects to the cap
Well this tab was not making contact with the cap.
I discovered just by chance while pulling system apart for the thousandth time. I bent the tab and bang started and ran better than ever did. Been going out and start her for the last two weeks and starts every time so am sure I have the problem fixed. Think was jumping that gap and robbing spark from the plugs.
