Starting woes 8N

My neighbor has a 1952 8N. Knows how to check the oil and his mechanical ability ends about there. Began having starting problems and then the starter would not turn the engine at all. The brushes were worn beyond use and other things directed us to install a new starter and solenoid. Spins the engine nicely but sometimes requires pushing the (original) starting switch several times before getting a response. Cleaned the terminals on the battery and the cables and reinstalled the battery cables. The control wire to the solenoid had been broken and was just twisted together. Now it is properly spliced and soldered, with shrink tubing over the splice. But if the problem recurs, could it be the starting switch on the transmission cover? Other possibilities?

YES.......the BIG pushbutton switch at bottom of the tranny shifter can be BAD. Unfortunately, ya haffta remove the tranny shifter to replace the BIG starter button 'cuz the removal NUT is accessed from underneath the tranny shifter plate. CAUTION: watch fer the SPROING!!! There's a spring loaded ball detente for shifter control.

Worn brushes should be a BIG clue that yer starter motor needs rebuilding. Surprizingly enuff, the starter solenoid seldom goes BAD.

NEVER EVER oil/grease yer starter BENDIX. It must be SQUEEKY clean.

BIG TIP.......always mount the starter solenoid so the little middle terminal (10-32) faces the engine block where it is hard to gitt-too. .......electrical Dell

This will help you replace the starter switch.

The starter button is a grounding device and the wire comes from the back side of the starter solenoid. Make sure contacts on the button and solenoid are clean, bright and tight. As Dell said on the shifter and 2 more things. Under the shifter plate is a little spring that pushes the shifter plate up a bit so you can get your fingers on it. You will need a good gasket for the shifter plate, with out it it will leak oil. Last buy him a owners manual and a TO-4 manual. Post back if you need more help.

Bruce yesterday you told a poster that the Ns are not Rocket Science. There was a Rocket launched off the coast of VA. last night and they had to hit the destroy button on it as it was headed off course. Sounds fishy, you havent been dabbling in such things as you may have become board with the earthly vehicles?

Ha!

My neighbor & I along w/ our wives were standing out in his bean field last night w/ binoculars in hand (just as we did the night before) waiting for the launch. I figured I'd get NASA Live up on the smart phone to watch the launch live & before we could see the rocket over the horizon. Well, the site wouldn't load at 6:22....

The neighbors son was watching it live on TV & called him w/ the news.

The EI module on the rocket probably failed....... :)

h, no , Bruce! It 'ignited'....definitely ignited!

The news said they hit the kill button, but after
watching it your right, it failed on its own.
Thats the first time the news media got it wrong,
knock me over with a feather!

Thanks to all for the helpful information. Since the starting problem is intermittent, specific diagnosis is more difficult. Based on the info you have offered, a temporary method of grounding the solenoid should show if the original starting switch is faulty. That also would enable operation of the tractor while parts are being secured for proper repair.
Thanks again.
