1949 8N No Oil Pressure

Hello,
First time around, after sitting a year, I needed to prime the oil pump with a favorable result of good oil pressure reading. I kept starting it every 2 months and continued to get pressure except this last time nothing. It sat another year, tried the priming again, but apparently did not do the trick as no pressure. I did disconnect the tube at the gauge but nothing coming out. When I changed oil for the first time about a year ago, it was clean oil and saw/felt that the pick up tube was intact. What would be me next steps? If you say drop the oil pan to get to the pump, well, okay, I've never done anything like that so is that a job for a novice or not? thanks to you all.

ith the prospect of that much work ahead of me, I personally would not give up with a single priming attempt.

Question: what were you using to prime your oil
pump? If you're using motor oil,it's gone by the
time you get the plug on and try to start it. You
need to use a bit of 90w gear oil so that it stays
in the pump long enough so that you can start
it,BTDT. lha

As others stated and this. Remove oil lines and
the little brass jct on the block and blow them
out.You would not be the first to have a piece of
crud blocking oil flow. Reassemble lines, prime
with 90W gear lube. If no reading at gauge remove
the gauge line and check flow, if you get oil
replace gauge. Replacing the pump and or a leak
in pickup tube is a can do, just post if you have
to do it and these folks will walk you thru it.

No - that is not job for a self described novice. Based on your report you have a chronic problem. You can try again with a heavier oil (.e.g SAE 90) but if takes something that heavy to make it prime it is in bad shape. Try priming again with a heavier oil but if it takes that to get it going you are working your pump is on it's last legs.

Thanks all for your responses. I am afraid it is a chronic issue as well since I know others who have had 8Ns sit long whiles and get oil pressure right away. I did use the 90wt oil, but good reminder. I think I will try the prime again next week and if that does not work, will explore cleaning out the lines. I'm hesitant to remove something from the block, but I'll take a look at it anyway. It makes sense getting as close to the problem source as possible. I'm not afraid to try new things with coaching as that is how I learn. But will not move forward without understanding the risks involved. I so much appreciate the forum insights. thanks, will let you know how I progress.

Try removing all the spark plugs and have someone pull you in 3rd gear for a ways. This will allow the engine to turn up a few hundred rpms and not get hot. It will also save on starter and battery.

This is interesting. What exactly would happen or occur with the oil pump by doing this? thank you
