6volt vs 12volt starter

Hi,
If you install a 12volt starter in a 6-volt 8N (not
coverted to 12-volt) will it work properly? I sent
out a 6volt starter to be repaired and got back a
new 12volt starter. Is it essentially the same and
turnover rate as using the 6-volt starter?
Thanks!

No it will not work since a 12 volt starter has different windings so as to make it 12 volts.

Its gonna turn slower, not have as nearly as much torque. But more importantly overheat by drawing more amps eventually burning out.

Thanks for the replies. Hopefully I can still get my original starter back. I had a friend take it to a starter/generator business (near where he lived) to repair for me about a month ago. Got back something else and cost $220. He seemed to think they told him it was a 12volt starter, which set off some alarm bells in my mind. I don't know how to tell the difference between a 12v and 6v starter by looking at it. Since it was like a month in passing, I hope it isn't too late to get my original back.

just had a thought. I just replaced rings and did a
valve job on this 8N (side mount distributor).
This new starter was installed and I am not getting
any spark to the plugs (though there is a weak
spark across the points via touching with a screw
driver). Could having a 12volt starter cause loss
of spark at the plugs in a 6 volt system?
Thanks! (I'm very deficit in electrical
knowledge.)

The possibility does exist where you may have a weak battery and the 12 volt starter drawing on a 6 V battery isn't leaving much left over for the ignition.

Why would you pay $220 to rebuild an old starter. You can pick up a used one for a heck of a lot less than that. I'm sure that there are plenty of folks on the site that would've had one to sell you.

The friend who dropped off the original had already
bought and paid for the new one weeks before I knew
what was going on.

wo bolts, two screws & re-builder can swap the field coils to 6v.

Just an update: the starter/generator rebuilding business that worked on my 8N starter claims:
1) it will make no difference whether the starter is a 12-volt or a 6-volt;
2) the starter they gave me was the casing of the original starter. They just painted it black.
2) they had to rebuild it with a lot of new parts, many of which are not standard, which is why it cost $220
3) they offered that if I am not happy and return it, they will give me a new starter for free.

Since a new starter can be had for half the amount they charged me in the first place, they are not doing me no favors giving me a "free" starter.
Maybe it is my original 6volt starter, I won't know until I try scraping some paint to see if the original red paint is there. Hopefully they didn't modify it to a 12volt, but then I don't know who is right on whether 6v or 12v makes a difference.

Thanks again for the replies.
