Royse and the Broken Elbow

As I have in the passed stated I really try and get parts Made in the USA. It takes some doing but I am seeing and finding more stuff all the time. I also buy up used parts on ebay the price is cheaper and it was all made here. Got a set of fitted plug wires Made USA $12, got a rebuilt 3 post original Ford genny $189 made here. I bought 6 Mar/Sch TSX carbs for a 3rd of a knock off carb and they all have the brass venturi. That said I had a rush job on a 52 N I shopped here and there and got CIT, that stands for China India and Turkey. I use toggle switches for ignition and lights, 2 from china, 1 busted in 3 pieces while I tightened the nut. 2nd one no juice would flow through it. Put a new seat on it the fancy 1 size fits all cushioned seat and back adj with springs, its comfortable, but the bolts that hold the pads to the frame were to short and no lock washers? 1 bolt had no threads, glad I had the old chinese seat that I took off this N it had longer bolts and lock washers. I was making up a new fuel line for it and I use brake line tubing and the pipe cutter in my kit had the roller pin come out and the cutting wheel was no good as I could not locate the pin. When I clamped the tubing in the flair vice the tubing would not hold due to the fact the ridges that hold it in place had worn down. Well things ware out and I had flared 7 or 8 fuel lines with it since 2007. Made in ROC. Anyway the elbow that shattered on Royse is just how most of this stuff is made. My buddy who farms has all green paint tractors and combiners replacement parts are imported which used to be from Canada,France, Italy,Germany. The bearings are all chinese the last one he put in lasted 7hrs and it had a grease fitting!!Good thing it was not a sealed bearing. Anyway I am not surprised at the elbow and I bet neither is Royse.

L.B. sounds like your luck runs about like mine...Where did you get the USA fitted wires for $12..I need a set of them if they are any good..Yea, I have been hearing that the green stuff ain't what it use to be BUT they still charge a bunch more for that green paint..The Orange one is what I want.Still kicking myself in the behind for not buying one a few years ago before they got greedy and went WAAAy up on their prices too...

I've got a different perspective.

Unless you went to or ordered that elbow directly from China, India or Turkey, you bought it from a US company.

A company that has no concept of quality control....or understands the concept & chooses to sell junk.

I don't complain about the country of origin for junk; it's the importer that needs the azz-kicking.

I'm afraid you're right Bruce. It's about competitive pricing in the market place. Manufacturers that were once quality driven feel in order to snag their fare share of sales has to reduce quality to compete at the cheaper market price. Not the kind of thing our country is used to but it's the nature of global economics. We're forced to compete in a market we used to dominate because some people aren't willing to pay extra for a superior product.I hope soon it gets turned around again and we start seeing the "made in america" tag once more. A sad scenario indeed.

ebay Tom, ReliableAfterMarketParts but the price fluctuates. The reason is the prices rise and fall automaticly when a competitor lowers a price on ebay. Lots of free shipping on ebay too. I try to buy from our sponsor but they have been out of gennys forever and they offer no rebuild service.
The best thing our sponsor could do is push their suppliers for USA Made Parts and people would beat a path to their site.

That my friends is the problem in a nut shell. People looking for a deal. On tractor parts that can had new people shop Ebay for good used. On parts that are available new they price shop. Pretty soon the company selling a good part at a fair price winds up being forced to import cheap stuff to stay in business. Really not fair to blame a business that follows on something like that. They have no choice, they compete or go broke. And it's us, the consumer, shopping on Amazon, Ebay and other sites all trying to save a buck. Then we cry when we can't get decent parts or products. If we collectively stopped buying cheap parts there wouldn't be any parts available for a while because it takes time to set up manufacturing someplace. Then we would complain about the prices. Kinda funny but when I bought my first 8N the first repair was rear axle seals and brakes. My local NAPA was able to get the parts but I was told they were not going to be available for long. Had to do the same thing on my next 8N. The parts came from Tisco. They were about half what I paid for the parts from NAPA. Darn sure were not the same quality but what to do? NAPA quit selling them not because of Tisco's prices, NAPA quit selling them because not enough people were willing to spend the extra money to get better parts to make it profitable for them to continue.

Since you stepped on your soap box, LB, I'll step up on mine :)

I think YT has actually done a reasonable job sourcing decent quality parts. They have improved their parts quality over the 10 years or so that I've been purchasing from them. And since my business relies on those parts, I'm willing to pay for a premium product. I believe that buying new is important because it ensures the continuation of the product supply through demand. Furthermore, I try to avoid scrappers for the same reason: scrappers reduce demand by parting out often other-wise repairable tractors that could be repaired and thus maintain demand. Craigslist is full of them, and they make my blood boil.
