Reattaching after split

Ok, split my '47 8N front coil between tranny & diff, then between engine & tranny. replaced chipped gears, reassemble front split without too much difficulty. Now, attempting to reassemble rear split.

Was supposed to slide together like greased skids. NOT! Got about 1" to go, and she won't budge. Any thoughts on what might be hanging it? I'm think'in possibly needs to be EXACTLY lined up?

Appreciate your feedback. Thanks!

First of all did you use an alignment tool when you installed the pressure plate and disc onto the flywheel?
If the disc is not concentric with the pressure plate it is hard or impossible to get the shaft back into the pilot bearing.
Secondly. you need to mate the two halves square to one another. They can't be cocked up or down or side to side at all.
Straight is the name of the game.
Some guys use longer pilot bolts to help align things. They can make a big diffeence.
Lastly, what does having a front mount or side mount distributer have to do with the clutch?

Probably the splines on the PTO shifter. You might want to try turning the PTO a tiny bit to see if you can feel the splines lining up.

The rear usually goes back together as easy as the front. Did you pull the pto shaft from the rear housing? If not, that's probably the hang-up. You'll have to rotate the pto shaft until the splines line up so it can slide back together. Make sure the pto shifter is removed also.

I did split the front, but it went back together without too much hassle. I didn't touch the clutch or pressure plate. I did pull the PTO shaft before splitting the rear. I also removed the PTO shifter.

I spun the PTO shaft, it also won't go fully in, same spacing as split. I'll try that again and go slower looking for a slide-in.

I know the coil location has nothing to do with a split. But I've seen many posts when that info is NOT provided, and someone asks (or complains). So, I threw it in just in case! LOL

What UD says is still relevant. Being level front to back helps a lot. I always level front to back before any split, going by the bottom of the block. I jack up the front or let air out of the fronts to level it. It can make a big difference. Also as UD said temporary long bolts as a guide can help.

I did use long bolts for both front and rear splits. They were a great help! I agree, level is best. Unfortunate that my garage is dirt floor and extremely unlevelled at the moment.

I did have success today! Got the rear split back together. Took a lot of work, raising & lowering both front & back till it finally popped together. I was a happy camper, until I ran into my next issue.

The PTO shifter won't move. It is installed and oriented correctly (I think). If I remove the shifter cover on the left side, is their a way to shift the PTO on & off through the opening? Is it possible I did something to the unit attached to the countershaft? I'll be checking it out tomorrow.

Thanks to ALL for your help and feedback!
