hard to start

I have a 1950 8n that will start if I have a battery charger hooked to the battery while I am starting the tractor. It will not start without the charger hooked up to the battery. The battery must be to weak to start the tractor. How do I check the battery without taking the thing out and taking it to autozone.

Have you checked it with a meter-should read 12.5 or so volts-but could read this and still have a weak cell. Taking it out and getting it tested is the thing to do unless you have a load tester..

See tip # 49 at the link.

6v or 12v?

If it's 12v, the AZ can load test it for you.

Good luck on getting a 6v load tested these days.

That tractor came new as a 6 volt. If the battery is more then a couple years old trade it in on a new one and save yourself a lot extra trouble.

You can't be serious.

I get at least 6 & sometimes 8 years out of a quality (Deka) 6v battery.

Just keep them charged. Run them monthly or use a float charger.

a laod tester will tell you...

if it is charged and battery voltage drops heavily when you try to start, then you know it has a bad cell.

a 12v battery should be 12.6v or so charged, and not drop past 9-10 starting.

a 6v should be 6.3 charged, and not untder 4.5 starting. preferably 5.
