After ring gear instal - tractor doesn't start

i replaced ring gear and reattached wiring tractor doesn't make
a sound. No click or anything . Was going to replace wire
harness but I got excited about my new ring gear I did not re
attach lights just let the wires hang . Plan was to get tractor
started then spend the colder months cleaning and rewiring.
I have no electrical meters. Nothing is attached to the amp
meter all of the other wires ( one from coil two to the key one
to the starter selinoid ) are attached to the metal piece behind
the toolbox under the amp meter. .
I recharged the batter just to be sure that's not it . Any thing
else I need to do ?

What model tractor?

6v or 12v?

If it's an N, front or side distributor?

Any reason you don't own a meter? They're free most of the time at Harbor Freight. No use working w/ one hand behind your back.

How about a test light?

Got a wiring diagram?

12 volt. 8n front distributor . Never needed meter before ( I'm a rookie mechanic ) been using a wiring diagram I found on line. I wired it up the way it was when it was running. Next stop harbor freight . What's it called an amp meter? Or something else?

http://www.harborfreight.com/7-function-multimeter-98025.html the 6/12v circuit tester probe is also good for those that aren't meter friendly

Re the picture.......it's called a "7 function digital multi-meter".

" been using a wiring diagram I found on line.'

Which might be your problem.

Google "wiring diagram JMOR". Find the one that fits your tractor & use that.

Post back w/ results or more questions.

Those Harbor Freight meters are handy. I also have a few others that I had from my days as an electrician[4 years]. Both good ones are Sperry brand, one multimeter, one clamp-on volt-ammeter,which comes in handy if you're worried about something pulling too many amps, just clamp it around one electrode, hot or ground and voila . lha

does your machine still use the big thumb button to start? or has it been swaped to a car solenoid?

if the oem one. did you remove the relay and reinstall it with the lil 3rd tab aiming out and easy to get to?

What happens if you bypass the solenoid and jump start the tractor? Make sure you are in neutral. Take a 12 volt battery and put one jumper cable to the stud on the starter motor in front of the solenoid. Put a jumper cable from the other battery post and touch any good ground. A brake or clutch pedal will do. IMPORTANT - make sure it is in neutral.

Paterson, I had the same symptoms when I reinstalled the starter on my Ferguson TO-20. (I hadn't changed any of the wiring, either.)

It turned out that I had accidentally twisted the post on the starter where the cable connected, and broke an internal connection in the starter. A trip to the starter repair shop fixed the problem.

Oh, BTW, my Fergy is a 12v, side-mount distributor, but a Ford guy (Thanks, GB in MT) figured it out.
