I have a 1948 8n Ford tractor that I recently bought. This is my first old Ford tractor. My ammeter started going back and forth between charge and discharge. I checked voltage on the generator and it checked out OK. I replaced the voltage regulator and polarized it per the instructions, I ran a jumper wire from the Batt. to the Arm. contact and got a little spark as the instructions said. The tractor is still acting just like before, and going back and forth between charge and discharge. If it goes to discharge, you can tap the outside of the regulator and it will go back to charge for a little bit, and may stay there for a while or it might go right back to discharge, no ryme or reason to whats happening. The tractor is a 6 volt positive ground and I have checked the voltage regulator for a good ground. Can any of you Ford guys out there give me any advise as to what to check next??? I'm about to throw up my hands and load the tractor up and take it to town to the local gerenator shop and let him deal with it, but I have to take a day off work to do that. Thanks for any advise!!!
