Problem removing plug

Is their a special tool used to remove the ball & spring plug (353454S) on my early 8N front mount? Or do I need to grind a screwdriver to fit the slot in the plug? Plug is in tight, appreciate suggestions on how to remove, from the experts! Thanks!

Dunno what you are yammering about... that FIAT part number references a Welch plug that would be inserted in one of the core holes in the area of the block left from the casting process in the water jacket area... NO ball or spring or re-ground screwdriver needed.

Wow, my first goof today! Thought I was looking at the right part in my FO4 manual, guess not. I know better than to think. It always gets me in trouble!

The plug is for the lower right side rail spring & ball, plug # 747238F if my eyes don't lie to me.

Appreciate the corrections!

Guess you mean #18 in the pict

Yep, that is the bad boy! My new-born great grandbaby is going to sleep, the lights are off. Hard to read the FO4 manual in the dark.

Glad we got that straightened out. Any suggestions? Thanks!

God bless on the new addition.

As far as the plug I need to defer to the others. Never removed one so I don't want to mis-lead you. Hopefully the pict will get you a quicker answer.

detent ball plugs on my 5-speeds, I just stick a screwdriver in them, give it a whack and turn them out.
Large slotted flush fasteners, like the screws in brake drums,
the hubcap remover end of a T-handled lug wrench works pretty good.

I have to ask why you want to remove it? detent problems? The only times I have removed them is during transmission rebuild. All the ones I have taken out, came right out with BIG screw diver.

Had to replace 2nd gear on main shaft, and 2nd gear on countershaft. When I removed the countershaft rail, the ball rolled out and the spring remained, Since this is my first attempt at fixing an 8N, my learning experience is large!

I found a tool that works! It's called a IMPACT DRIVER. Just insert a bit, put it square on the screw or bolt, and give it a whack. You can drive a screw either in or out. First time I've ever used one, it was slick and fast!

Thank you all for your feedback!

Impact drivers work pretty good. These transmissions are pretty simple and fun to work on!
