Pic up power from the battery side of the key switch, not the
switched side, where it connects to the ballast resistor.
Run that through a fuse to a switch. (or use a fused switch)
Run the other side of the switch to one terminal on the lights.
Ground the other terminal of the lights.

There are a couple of variations on this depending on your
setup, but this should get you buy for stock 6V system.

Diagrams are out there, I didn't try to look one up to post.
Don't try to wire it so the key turns the lights off.
The stock key switch won't handle that much current.
 
I think what you are referring to as a coil is the original wire
wound ballast resistor. The block that it is mounted on is also
the wiring junction where I meant you should hook your power
wire on to. Looks like this?
