I just bought a 9N Ford, it was 6 volt,so I bought a 12 battery, want to change to 12volt so I can operate a front mounted snow plow blade with elec winch, tried to install the 12volt batt, selinod cable to pos post ,ground cable to neg post and just get sparks, what am I doing wrong.

more info.

what are you calling a selenoid post?

9n/2n don't come from the factory with a solenoid.. but rather a manual start switch.

post a pic of what you have and what you are trying to do. it's possible you may be dealing with hacked up wireing and eletrical system from the prev owner.

the neg post tied to chassis, and the positive post to one side of the manual start switch, the other side of that switch to the starter would be the correct setup.

Soundguy you are right ,its not a selinoid, but other wise it appears to be hooked correct, but when I put the cable from the starter switch on to pos post, and the ground cable on to neg post it shows discharge all the way to the right like it was showing a full charge, could this be wired diff when it was 6 volt?,unable to post picture at present

Try disconnecting wire from back if generator, and then see if your ammeter pegs when hooking the 12v bat up

You cannot simply put in a 12 volt battery. From what I read, that's what you're trying.

You'll need a 12volt alternator to replace the generator. Need to do some more investigation.

Hope your back on here today Soundguy,I disconnected gen like you suggested, and now that part works, can connect battery like supposed to and no sparks, now looks like I need to go find an alternator, would a one wire work ok? John

Yes a 1 wire will work, most of them cist more, and take plenty of rpm to self excite. I don't normally recommend them, however in this case, lets just Sa its appropriate. He a 1 wire gm, make sure
Bat I beg grnd. Innstall alt, hook charge line to the wire that goes from generator cutout back to tractor wireing. In other words, remove cutout, one cutout wire goes to Gen, other to tractor, bthe one to tractor is where the alt charge stud hooks. If ammeter reads backwards when charging, swap wires side to side on it, or if loop style, run wire thru opposite direction. You should still have the cas resistor, and I reccomend a 12v 2.5 ohm square coil
