Hello'
All help is appreciated[
My 1948 8n 12 volt is giving me a fit. When I attach the Battery Cables the Starter begins turning over. Never did this before. A "fellow" tinkered with it while I was away. Upon my return a can't start my tractor. All help is appreciated, thank you all!

[Thanks for your reply. I'll check the starter solenoid and report back how it is wired. I'll try your tip (age of it unknown)

Why was the "fellow" messing with it?? Did it have a
problem before he messsed with it? Curiosity killed
the cat..

8nsyes........ah yes, the self starter.

Heres the deal, the starter mounted solenoid has a little middle terminal that MUST point to the block; NOT OUT to the side where it is eazy to gitt too. The little middle terminal (10-32) is wired thru the bottom of the dash panel and then to the BIG thumb switch at the bottom of the 4-speed shifter. The BIG thumb switch "grounds" the starter solenoid, thus operating the solenoid to operate the starter motor.

And NO, the solenoid don't care, 6-or-12 volts; positive (+) or negative (-) ground. And surprizingly enuff, yer starter motor don't care positive (+) or negative (-) ground either. And in intermittent starter duty, 12-volts just makes the 6-volt starter motor turn faster for quicker starts. So NO, you do NOT need a 12-volt starter motor.

Remember, when starting the 8N, (either 6-volt or 12-volt) ittza 2 rumpa-rumpas BEFORE you QUICKLY pull the spring loaded choke knobby. After it starts, you can then "feather" yer choke knobby to keeper running until it runs smoothly without the choke. Simple, eh? .......choked-up Dell

Hello Dell:
I discern that you are quite a "pistol"
(reply to post at 23:30:48 10/20/14) :) Thank you kindly for yer store house of information this gives me knowledge that is most useful. If you will, explain to me the knowledge of the ONE pole alternator, I.e. which is hot, etc.

8nsyes........dunno whatcha mean ONE pole alternator...ie...which is hot, etc.

Howsomevers......there are 2-commonly used virgins of the Delco 10SI alternator...ie...1-wire and 3-wire. I don't like the 1-wire 'cuz it is internally wired to putt-outt about 17-volts to yer 12-volt battery.

I prefer the 3-wire virgin of the Delco 10SI where you must provide a temporary "switched" excitation from yer ignition switch. There is less chance of OVER-volting yer 12-volt battery and BOILING the water outta battery and sulfateing yer lead plates and killing yer battery.......electrical Dell

Dell;
Thank you for this information. I notice that you speak my native tongue, I was born and raised in the Black Mountain of ------, Ky. I "learned Floridian" and ain't completely weaned of my native tongue. Anyway, thanks for your information on the alternator.
