Bearings removal, how to?

Hi folks,

Happy Sunday! Got my 8N split two ways. Behind the tranny, and between engine & tranny. Pulled the gears out, now want to replace 2nd gear for the main drive gear, and the countershaft 2nd gear (anyone have either or both for sale)? Problem: How do I remove the bearing cones from both ends of the shafts? They appear to be on the shafts tightly!

As always, respect your opinions and appreciate your suggestions!

You can use a large gear puller and pull the gear and bearing together or you can put them in a press and press them off. The countershaft rear bearing will require a bearing separator to use with the puller or the press. Many auto parts stores will loan or rent the tools you need if you don't have them. I've got used original gears available, or this site has new replacements. Email if you're interested.

It's really one of the easiest things you can
do on that transmission fix.

Just drop the end of the shaft onto a solid
piece of Oak wood on a concrete floor.

I've done it many times. One drop is all it
takes.
The weight of the gear stack does the work.

Appreciate both feedbacks!

John, an email was just sent your way.

Zane, must it be oak, or would a pine 2X12 work as well? I probably will need a special tool to install new bearings, no?

You guys are life savers. Thanks!

"Just drop the end of the shaft onto a solid

I do that too, but it only works for 1st and 3rd gear on the mainshaft. It doesn't work for the 2-4 end of the mainshaft or for either end of the countershaft.
