Clutch aligning tool

ok so ring gear has been replaced and starter put back I just put the clutch on and I see that I need an alignment tool what do I use ? And where do I get it?

8n tractor
Any position starter should be in?
Thanks

While inside there always a good thing to replace the front trans. input shaft seal..While shaft is out use it as the alignment tool...

If you do not choose to take the input shaft out, most any generic automotive clutch alignment tool you can rent or buy starting in the $20 range will do the job.

I use an old input shaft from a parts tractor. But I have a plastic alignment tool that came with a clutch kit. I you cannot find, beg or borrow an alignment tool, I will send you mine for the cost of shipping.

As To said or buy one from an auto parts store cost is around $20 or so then you have one for life unless you loose it

Learned that here on the forum yrs ago, so not my smarts but someone else's and it makes sense and does work--has to work. BTDT -- Tks

No springs and such inside--might have to wiggle or rotate the shaft a tiny bit (by hand---no force) to get the gear on the shaft to drop back in place.

This is what you will see when you remove the 4 bolts and the shaft. The 4 studs you see in the picture I made to hold the gasket in place and help line up the shaft when re-installing.

I've never used a clutch aligning tool on an N. Eyeball and feel clutch plate evenly behind the pressure plate. Bring trans and engine together carefully piloting the input splines into the clutch plate. Using long bolts through the housing flanges, I lightly tighten each side and rotate the input shaft with the pto shaft at the rear of the tractor (may have to have one rear tire off the ground). Some magic words and wala!
I can be hard headed.

Good idea-yea, it is kinda close space to work in when trying to get the gasket situated abd the gears to re-mesh. I did that on hydraulic covers but had not thought about it for this application. Also picture is better than lots of words..

There's no reason NOT to use an alignment tool.

Even with the best job a guy can do with one, sometimes the splines hang up a bit.

It doesn't take much of a push to permanently damage the lined plate.

If "tweaked" even a little, the clutch will drag when released, or be "grabby" for the rest of it's life.

Over the years, I've cleaned up plenty of messes from clutch hack jobs.

Hey Del, is that the gasket or the shims that the studs are holding in place? I thought that there should only be shims there to set the pre-load? Also if you remove the input shaft I thought you need to re-set the preload?
