no power in 8n

A while back I posted that my 8n had no power. Received several good tips. Took it to a shop to have them look at it and they found that there was problems with timing. They ground out the slot so the timing could be advanced more and now it runs like a top. Didn't want to spend money to check out timing gears yet. Thanks for the responses

Front mount distributor or side mount?
Either way it shouldn't have to be modified, but many
places do not have experience with the front mount.

I did a search on your posts here. This is what appears to be your post re performance problems:

I see that a number of regulars here asked you some questions, most of which went unanswered. You did not reply to my questions:

6v or 12v?

Front or side distributor?

When is the last time you replaced the points, plugs, condenser, rotor & cap & set the timing? And adjusted the carb? (tip # 40)

I'll assume you have a frontmount distributor based upon this statement:

" They ground out the slot "

If that is what they did, they did not fix your tractor. At some point, the pigtail will ground out on the clip because the plate has been turned too far.

Not to worry...it can be "unfixed" easily.

Assuming that you want our help to do that.

I know the repair is temp., but didn't have the cash to go ahead and take the front off to get to the cam. It is a front mount distributor and new plugs and points were installed. Right now, I'm just happy that it runs and will pull itself. I appreciate all the info that is given, I have copied the 75 tips and read them. When I get time to tear into it again I will post what I find.

If I might ask, how do you know you need to get to the cam?
I might have missed it, but I didn't see anything about proving
that was required. Did the shop take it apart and check the valve
timing? There are no timing marks on the exterior of a front mount.
I've seen one of those distributors cut out just because someone
didn't put the points in it correctly and then couldn't get them set right.

I have never had the front of the engine apart, don't have a clue what is up there for sure. The shop said that they thought that the problem was up front and they would have to take the hood and radiator off to get to the cover and check what I thought was the cam. never worked on a ford front distributor, don't have a clue what is under the cover.

" never worked on a ford front distributor"

And it does not appear that your "mechanic" has either.

I think Royse has diagnosed your problem:

" I've seen one of those distributors cut out just because someone didn't put the points in it correctly and then couldn't get them set right."

There are 2 chances that something is wrong w/ the timing gears: slim & none.

" I have copied the 75 tips and read them."

Tnx. Glad you found them helpful. Check out tip # 39 for the manuals you will need.

Next time you have a problem. just come here.
