ok so I got the Sherman combo yesterday...do I need to buy shims for it or are they already in it? Also the rear mounting plate do I use the bolts from the input shaft? I need to get a lever for it also. Should I open it up and look at the inside? I purchased it off Craigslist in MI and to my surprise it came from R&M Tractor...in Leslie MI...They said it comes with a guarantee..TIA

I'll assume the combo installs similar to the step-up

there are no shims inside the trans, the shims are for the bearing cup- they go between the sherman mounting plate and the tractor.

you have to take apart the sherman enough to take off the rear mounting plate, as the bolts to bolt it to the tractor are on the inside of the sherman.

Hey Lisa, enclosed are a few picts of the one i'm gonna be installing when I get some time.
If you look at the third picture, you will see the mounting plate attached to the Sherman by 4 outer hex bolts. Between the sherman and the mounting plate is a gasket.GAsket is in the 2nd picture.
The mounting plate is bolted to the tractor using 4 hex bolts. These are the 4 inner bolts in the pict. The shims will fit between the mounting plate and the tractor as Tiger Joe said.
Last pict is that of the shims. I picked up 5 shims for $8 including delivery off of ebay.

Ok...i have to go out to the garage after
the kids leave and look at it again. Looks
like I'll need the shims...and possibly a
gasket and the hex bolts. I know the rear
mounting plate is held on with 2 zip
ties...maybe I'll cut them and see if the
bolts are in it or buried in the packing
peanuts. I'll post back after 5

If its held on by zip ties, I assume you have no mounting bolts securing the mounting plate to the Sherman.
Any grade 2-5 bolts should work fine here. I don't have the mounting plate bolt size but make sure they do not protrude past the mounting plate face as shown in pict 3. I think that you can use the existing bolts removed from the input shaft.

The other 4 bolts that mount the mounting plate to the tractor are actually Allen head bolts. Again I don't remember the length.

John Smiths Site has excellent install instructions. If you need I can send them to you provided John is OK with this.

As far as I know those shims are the same shims used to shim the bearing retainers and PTO support on the rear of the trans. The input shaft paper gasket is the same layout...

If I were gonna keep it, it would come apart....

they are actually the same shims used to set the preload on the input shaft. So when you remove the input shaft hang on to them So that you can reuse them for the Sherman. I bought a few extras just in case

Sweet...I should have plently of shims
then. Yes I plan to put it in my 51. Now
the search for the bolts

You will need 4 3/8-16 x 7/8 socket head bolts to mount the plate and 4 7/16-14 x 1 hex head bolts to mount the sherman to the plate. The shift lever is also head on by a 3/8-16 x 7/8 socket head bolt.

Perfect. I've got a bunch on other parts
tractors I can steal if I need. I think I
can print the instructions from smiths
page? This will.more than likely be a
winter project. I plan to order the
rebuild kit from red rock mfg For it

When I bought my Sherman combo it was totally rebuilt ground up so actually I paid a little more than normal for it. But I would love to see pictures of you doing the actual rebuild how parts and pieces fit together tolerances etc. I think it would be beneficial to a lot of folks on this site maybe they would be able to post it as a tutorial.

As is my nature I did disassemble it as much as possible but stopped at disassembling all the gears. Figured why tempt fate

It will be a good learning project. We
plan to rebuild another combo whenever we
have time to get the tractor in the shop
and disassemble it. Might not be till
winter on that one too. I just hope it
doesn't turn into an expensive rebuild or
need a part I can't get without breaking
the bank. I might take the top off today
and have a look in there if I have time.
Need to get the parts tractors
disassembled and the important stuff into
the shed before they sit outside another
winter.
