flywheel removal

hi guys I finally got to split the tractor today. I removed the clutch plate cover and now I need to remove the flywheel to replace the ring gear ( which is the reason for the splitting in the first place ) how do I get at it ? Is it those 4 nuts in the center that will let me get at it or is there some other way ? When I try to loosen them the whole thing turns and they don't budge . Thanks again
Stuart

Yes the 4 bolts in the flywheel need to be removed. You can wedge a block of wood between the flywheel and the case to keep it from turning.

Pat........yes, remove the 4-bolts and the flywheel will fall off'n onto yer toes. (thus breaking the fall, eh?)

BIG TIP........stuff some soft 1/4" clothes rope down enny sparkie hole and the up-cummin' piston will be STOPPED by the cylinder head and the crankshaft won't turn enny more.

Generally, ya wanna drill a 1/4" hole between 2 of the flywheel teeth so you can SPLIT the gear off'n the flywheel with a cold chisel. Simple, eh?

Note which way the teeth are beveled; 'cuz the starter Bendix suck's up from the tranny side.

There's a "groove" around the flywheel that the ring gear fits into. You haffta HEAT the ring-gear pretty HOT to expand it enuff to fit over the groove. Let cool NATURALLY, it will SHRINK tite and won't move. .......Dell

You have bolts I have nuts. Never seen them before the inside of them is concave like you could fit half a ball inside. Anyway there not budging!

I would use an impact wrench too. I did it today.
Took the ring gear off of one flywheel and put it on another.
Dell's method is fine.
A fellow using hand tools and no air tools?
Yes.
Bending a rod before the bolt turns loose is unlikely.

Don't really need an air impact wrench, an electric one will do the job too. I have both. I don't know about those 12 volt ones though, I have a 120 volt plug in one.

Teddy.......ya ain't been around much haff ya? The rope trick is quite common in repairing B&S lawnmower engines.......respectfully, Dell

Yep pulled many a fly wheel off that way.

Last one I did I figured I'd teach my 12 yr old son at the time.
Told him to put the short piece of rope in the hole. He did just that and screwed the spark plug back on.
Then he learned how to fish the rope out.

Got it off used an impact wrench worked like a charm . Kept fly wheel from turning by using a block of wood through the hole for the starter

wERE THEY NUTS OR BOLTS?

I have actually broken loose bolts with a 12 volt
impact where I had failed with my air impact..The 12
volt ones I have had rev up then engage an internal
weight to give it a "slam"-kinda like hitting the
corner of a hex head bolt with a chisel...Only
problem is I haven't been able to find a good
quality 12 volter--most of em are cheap made and
don't last worth a flip.
