Late 1948 front mount 8N, original 6v ignition system.
was running fine, and when i went to restart it after lunch I got a small click the first time i tried to start it and then no sound at all on subsequent tries. Assumed it was probably the selonid or starter.
checked all the connections and they were fine. took a meter to the seloniod and got continuity when the starter button was pushed and none when it wasn't so assumed the solenoid was okay. took the battery lead from the selonid and put it directly on the starter lug and got nothing. tried to jump start directly to the starter and got nothing. so i assumed the starter was bad.
I had a new starter on hand, so put that one on and the tractor fired right up, so I figured i'd fixed the problem. turned it off, refilled the radiator (I took off the drain cock to get the starters on/off) and when i tried to restart got the one time click and then nothing. exactly the same situation.
when i changed them out, i made sure to clean off all the connections and cleaned off the mating surfaces of the new starter and tractor body so that shouldn't be the problem.
I'm completely stumped - i suppose it's possible that a brand new starter could naturally fail after one start, but that doesn't really seem likely, so does anyone have any ideas on what could be the issue?
