2n Part Identification

Working on my 2N and I am trying to figure out what things are. I am adding a key switch to keep my kids from starting the tractor since it was wired with a hot start button on the dash. I have a push pull switch that seems to do everything. Can anyone identify this switch, pn or name or something. I am thinking I would like to replace it.

Next, I am trying to figure out why, if I am right, there is 2 resistors wired in series to the coil?

Next, can I put a water temp gauge in the side of the block where I pulled a plug and drained the water? Will it give me an accurate reading?

The oil fill tube is loose and leaky. Is there a simple fix for this, other than buying a replacement tube?

Has it been converted to 12V? If it has, that second resistor is probably there to step the voltage down for the coil.

That switch looks like a universal light switch, but could be used for anything.

You could put a temp sensor in that hole, but it won't give you correct readings. You can drill and tap the head or buy or fab up a tee fitting for the upper radiator hose (that's where I put mine).

You could try removing the oil tube, cleaning it and the block really good and popping it back in with some sleeve retaining compound.
 
When you say switch does everything, you have ignition and maybe lights. What is everything?
It does appear to be a universal light switch.
 
clean the dipstick tube real well hole real well and put some JB weld around it, wont come out. As long as the sensor on the temp sending unit goes inside the block, and is actually in the circulating water you should get a correct reading.
 
I would guess that your tractor has been
converted to 12 volts but still has the
original 6 volt square can front coil. The
original ballast resistor is a variable
resistor that increases resistance with heat
(run time). It helps starting but limits
current when running so coil does not burn up.
The second resistor reduces the 12 volts down
so the coil only see a voltage like it did on a
6 volt system. You can get rid of the second
resister by installing a 12 volt square can
coil. I have never seen a probe for a
temperature gauge that will fit in that drain
hole. The open space in the water jacket is not
deep enough. If you pull the fill tube out,
clean it and the hole in the block, put on any
type of good sealer and let it set overnight I
suspect the leak would stop.
 
I think you can buy a adapter to put in the upper
rad hose for a gauge.

I made one for my 9n out of exhaust pipe and a
pipe fitting. Shortly after I made it I know I saw
them for sale somewhere.

Your el cheapo Sunpro mechanical gauge will come with a fitting that will work in the block drain. I just finished installing one there a few weeks ago. Advanced, Autozone, etc will have one.

The adapter spaces the sense bulb out far enough to not contact the cylinder wall. Install was easy.

It will read cool on the gauge as opposite to operating temp. Working mine hard the gauge only read about 140 when I have a 185 thermostat installed.

Sure does look like a headlamp switch.

ont he oil tube, I'd pull itand clean it and the hole squeaky clean.

put something roubd profile in your vice and slip the tube over it then take a ballpeen or other smooth faced hammer and tap around the OD of the metal. this will stretch it and enlarge the od.

do a lil and try fit.

once you get a snug fit, put some #2 permatex on it and tap it in, then take a pin punch and puncture wound around it in say 4 spots. this will shrink the id of the hole and is called 'staking'.

For a really worn one, you could apply some sliver solder to the tube OD to size it up and then follow the rest of the directions.

NO! Keep the OEM resistor.
