I have a 8n 6 volt, its been starting good as always, went to start it this morning and it started and ran for a couple of seconds and quit, I think because it was cold, went to start it again and it acted like battery was dead, put battery charger on for like a min and it started right up, after brushing hogging for a hour I shut it off and wouldnt start again, put battery charger on for like a min it started again. where do I start looking? battery, generator, or something else, It has an amp meter but not sure if it works, It shows just a little to the discharge side. sorry for the long post.

Put your battery on a charger. (see tip # 60)

You need a strong battery to:

1. Close the solenoid

2. Spin the starter

3. Engage the bendix

4. Provide voltage to the coil.

As the battery gets weaker, the first thing to fail is your spark. If the battery is almost totally dead, all you will hear is the solenoid clicking.

After you charge the battery, check it per tip # 49.

In addition to charging the battery, chances are you need new cables as well (tip # 41). And, don't forget to clean all the grounds, to include the mating area between the starter & the block.

The more current you use to spin the starter, the less you have for the ignition.

When my 9n had problems with cold starting,I propped the choke open, set the throttle one or two clicks up.and used my crank to turn it over[key off]. When I turned the key on and pushed the starter,it would start right up.I bought a Deka battery, and have no problems since.

when running check voltage at battery, if it is not at least 7.2 at full throttle, you may have a problem. if it is int he 6.x range you surely do.

ensure that it is polarizzed, and check all connections and terminal ends.

also.. how old is the battery?

do you have a load tester?

post back.

I think battery is maybe 2 or 3 years old, yes I do have a load tester, I forgot about it.

some cheap batteries are 3 year jobs.

it's worth a check to load test it after an overnight trickle charge after servicing cells.

Just saying.."ran for a minute and quit" and "wouldn't start again"
He didn't say it was turning over
Was it in fact turning over?..just to clarify

Thanks for the help and suggestions, I put the tractor on a trickle charge yesterday after brush hogging and have not checked on it today, woke up this morning under the weather, so just resting today, I will check on it tomorrow, thanks to all again.
