distributor / carburator

you may be farther ahead to just buy one, in most cases you will have to rebuild a carb someone you buy from. and if it does not matter to you that the tractor is original you might consider upgrading to electronic ignition rather than point they are better and more power

I must have missed that chapter in my old RadioShack electronic manuals. Hell I must have missed all those classes when I went to technical school.

Ei certainly has its place, however some of it supporters pass along claims that might as well include hair growth and male prowess, without respect to the actual electrical principles involved. I'm not for or against ei, I own units with and without, I understand how and why ignition systems work.. But it wont grow hair, :)

I remember years back, we all changed out out standard GM HEI ignition coils for the high voltage ones. Been about 20 years now but I think mine was rated at 50K volts.

The story was, up the coil voltage add a high performance HEI module along with high performance wires, rotor cap and so forth and you will deliver a brighter and stronger spark in the combustion chamber which would give a more powerful combustion therefore delivering more HP/Torque.

Did it work, hell if i know, I didnt have anything to measure HP with. A trip to a dyno was too expensive to prove I just gained 1/2 HP on a 300HP engine. Milling the heads was where the cheap gains were.

LOL me too
I ran late 60's Fords at the drag strip.(1 SB, 1 BB)
Tried every points voodoo thing.
Finally got tired of it and started running MSD boxes.
Time slips never lie....dropped a couple tenths.
More power or just more efficient use of it?..who cares, I'll take those tenths.
On my small block car, I needed those tenths when the 5-ohs,
started showing up. Dang kids with their 25mpg grocery getters,
with EI and fuel injection, handing me my head with the same basic engine.............................

Upset a GTP owner when I chased him down once with a 350/2bbl on I79 in Pa (mwhahaha) but that thing LOVED the gas at them speeds. Only time 2:21 gears where fun to have :)

Unfortunately, not applicable to our discussion, it could have been but important how/ why info was left out :)

I ran.... actually still do when I can, a 1976 Pontiac Formula Firebird 400 engine under a 4 barrel Rochester. Replaced the heads with a set of 1968's that were milled down to give me 10:1 compression. Threw in a RAM air Intake and flow master exhausts. I get about 11-13 mpg when I don't touch the gas pedal.
