OT -- cleaning motorcycle chain

Son had to replace rear tire on Magna--while wheel
is off it would be good to clean the buildup of old
chain lube from the chain..Rexkon carb cleaner or
brake cleaner will hurt the O-rings? Wonder what
one should use to clean these up??? Tks for input..

I always stuck a wire through the end of it so I wouldn't have to stick my hand in to find it and dropped it in a bucket of diesel for awhile. Retrieve protruding wire and hang it on a handy nail to drip dry, lube it and be gone.

I do not clean my motorcycle chains, never have. The newer o-ring style chain uses o-rings to seal in the grease to lube the inner pin. Since it is sealed dirt can not get into this area. I would not submerge an o-ring chain in solvent. Also, if you remove the master link (if the chain has one) then you need to pack it with the special grease at reassembly.

If you feel an uncontrollable need to clean it you could use an o-ring approved cleaner and tooth brush on the sides of the links. Any thing else is IMO doing more harm than good.

BTW - You can inspect an o-ring chain by looking for a red stain at each o-ring. The presence of the stain indicates the inner pin is dry (no lube) and the chain is failing. I get between 20K to 30K miles on a chain depending on the size. I only use o-ring chains.

I just put mine in the parts cleaner with diesel for fluid, leave the pump on for an hour or so. Then I hang it to drip, when dry,I soak it in a plastic tub rolled up in motor oil. It takes a while, but oil gets soaked into the links.
