filling steering 8n box

I was about to drill and tap the bolt in the steering box for a zerk fitting on both 48 8ns but the earlier one built in late 47 doesn't have one but it does have a grease fitting on the steering column which the newer one doesn't. If I am correct the grease fitting on the column is for the upper bearing only. I also seem to remember folks on this sight talking about pouring gear oil down the steering tube. The first picture is the later 48 showing the bolt I intend to install the zerk in. The other 3 are of the early one both sides and the column. So what is the best way to lube the early one also known as Mr. Edd. BTW my thought was to use the JD corn grease that folks here talk about thru the newly installed zerk fitting. Thanks for any help.

Both those steering boxes look like 8N 3548 B. Used in the later 8N's. I do not think they came with a fill plug, yours may have been installed by someone. You can get lube into them by removing the 7/16 bolt that holds the dash mounting plate ( I think ). I filled mine using a zert I purchased on Ebay with Corn Head grease. I just cannot remember which bolt I removed for sure. You can check the bolt hole using a piece of wire with a hook in it to see if it goes into the gear box. Here is a picture of the box on my 49 and a box from a 48.
