hole in cylinder found after removing sleeve

After removing the .040" sleeve from cylinder 1 I noticed a hole in the bore that opens into the water jacket. It appears to have been there for a long while. Some rust around the area. The sleeve had a small amount of rust on the outside but very minor in lite of the fact that the water jacket was up against it. The last time the engine was rebuild was in the mid 60's. I don't know if it was there then because I was not involved and my Dad had the work done. My thought is to either try something to patch the hole or just install a new sleeve and let it be.
Any opinions??

I can tell you that a friend and I rebuilt a Mack 300 HP engine in the mid "80's with the same issue. This is a dry sleeve engine also and you could see that coolant had been present at a hairline crack. We honed it out like normal, but instead of lubing the sleeve and block with WD-40, we put beads of Loctite #272 (RED)in the block bores and pounded the sleeve in with an oak block and a BFH!! It was still running in the late "90's and no coolant in the oil!!

Thanks for your response Phil. My mechanic buddy mentioned possibly using hi temp silicone which I think is what you guys used back then also. That sounds like a winner to me.

Noooo there is a difference tween RTV and lock'em down sleeve retainer goop... Go with the retainer it will seal it and lock'er down....

Rtv does not equal loctite sleeve retainer.

I'd find a new mechanic vs the one mentioning rtv

Last time I checked sleeve retainer from loctite was green? they have 2 greens, one foe sleeves, one for screws already assembled ( unless that was Napa brand I bought?)

Loctite (aka Henkel) makes at least a dozen different compounds for bonding cylindrical assemblies. They also make thread locking compounds which are different animals. The cylindrical assembly bonding compounds have various cure strengths, viscosity, temperature/chemical resistances, and gap fill capabilities. A small sampler:

Loctite 680 (green() - 3500 PSI, high temp, close fit
Loctite 665 (amber) - 2200 PSI, high temp, close fit
Loctite 661 (yellow) - 2500 PSI, high temp, close fit
Loctite 660 (gray) - 2500 PSI, high temp, loose fit
Loctite 640 (green) - 3200 PSI, high temp, close fit
Loctite 635 (green) - 2900 PSI, medium temp, close fit
Loctite 620 (green) - 3500 PSI, high temp, close fit
Loctite 609 (green) - 2400 PSI, low temp. loose fit

For retaining sleeves in an N-series engine I would suggest Loctite 620, 640 or 680.

Wow, Thanks for all the good advice.

I'm sure my mechanic was using that term generically for my benefit.

But it appears that the fix is to not junk the block but to prep the bore before replacing the sleeve.

Thanks
Tom
