Like a drunken sailor

Am putting the final kibosh on this tractor I've been rebuilding all summer.
It has industrial style tires on it which are pretty much worthless for ag work.
Been searching Craigslist (searchtempest) almost every day since March within 400 miles for some used ones. But the ones you find are either very poor or too darned high.
So this morning I finally bit the bullet and bought new ones.
Ouch!
Come to think of it, I was a sailor once, and got drunk a few times. But I don't remember spending spending all my dough in one morning.
I sure do like having good tires though.

Well they look really nice. Im sure u paid a nice price. What they goin on? What brand tire you go with? I like the long bar long bar pattern.

dang, Brand New tires....so that's what they look like!
hate to say it but looks like NNP is going to have to buy a new something too.
Been looking locally for almost a year for just one decent 14.9-28 at a fair price.
Nice tractor so I don't want my usual 'good enough'....
with the 13.6-28's Turfs I had to put on that big ol 4000 RC
because of a bad bulge in one of the like new 14.9 Ags....I'm ashamed to take it outside.....sissy tractor :D

Funny, after weeks of cleaning and painting, and a few pics,
I don't give it a second thought to driving immediately into the mud or pushing aside branches with the nose on a tight trail...
But if I have to buy a new tire.....I'll be skittish on risky ground!

Thanks fellows,
I'll post photos of the tractor soon.
I have bought, sold, parted and traded about 25 tractors since I started messing with them and this is the third set of new rears I've bought. But I had to give up the other two sets when I sold the tractors they were on. Sniff.
I'm hoping to get to keep these for a few years.
16.9 X 24 Galaxys. Made in India.
For kicks I asked the tire man what Firestones would cost. He said about double and started typing on the computer to get me an exact price.
I told him don't bother and paid for these.

"About double"
Is the warranty double too?
I have no experience with Galaxy brand, but my tractors
see limited use so I would try it once if I had to buy new.
I hope they work out well for you.

Being a former Navy man I might have to take offense to what your saying. Oh and by the way the last time I messed with a 3000 of drive disconnect was on the left side

Did you say what ply they were?

Mine are old but not very worn Goodyears, but only 4 ply.

About that Vienna movie . . . it blew me away that Hitchcock directed it.

Enjoy your treat to yourself!

Well,
I got them on. Breaking the old ones down was pretty easy since I had the old tires off a few months ago to sandblast and paint the rims then remounted them.
I put new tubes in then too.
BTW, they are 8 ply rated.

They look great.
A tire service friend of mine stopped by (He is also a Green guy)
to try to talk me out of my Green tractors again. I tried to talk him out of a few of his. We were both unsuccessful :)
but we talked about new tires.
He told me the new ones seem to hold up to the actual work ok, but it is doubly important to keep the sun off em when parked.
he said they can't take the sun at all.
He knows I tarp most of my tractors with a little 'hat' tarp, just to keep water out of the tranny/rearend and keep a dry seat.
He said if I buy modern new tires, to add a small tarp crossways across the back to cover the tires and help them survive a while.

I have been thinking about that - how new tires wont hold up well to UV exposure. Sad!
But paint, gauges, steering wheels, seats, tie rod end boots and everything else takes a beating from the weather too.
I know I'm in a bit of a pickle. I presently have room to park one tractor inside. We're planning to build a new garage in the next year so I'll be able to store them both under cover but one of them is going to have to sit out for a while.
I've been watching for some old military style canvas tarping as I've seen the bad results of plastic tarps over tractors and machinery.

Look for some old trucking tarps. I've picked up about five myself. Most will need to be cut down to size. One will cover two to thee tractors with some left over for lawn mowers, ATVs or what ever. They have enough weight to them to say in place unless you get some really heavy winds.

I just bought a nice set of turf tires/rims and centers for by 8n mowing machine at an auction several weeks ago for $50. I just put them on last night. I have not decided if I am going to sell my ag tires or not. I may just keep them so I can put them back on that tractor if I ever sell it.

I've been looking on line for tarps and have been trying to decide on Polyester, Vinyl, Vinyl coated mesh or Canvas -- anything but POLYESTER.

Which of these are the "old trucking tarps" you suggest looking for?

If buying new, which would you suggest for vehicle cover and for firewood cover?

Thanks,
T

I don't know what they are made of. Seems to be some kind of
rubber material. I'v seen them sell for all prices at all conditions.
Some times someone will be selling like new. Those people usually
tried flat bedding and got out of it. I think they would be 3 or 4
hundred dollars new. Others like the one below are no longer
serviceable and will have some wholes and/or patches on them. But
they will still last a long time and are heavy. The patches look like a
piece off another tarp and some type of tar adhesive.
I bought some of mine from the guy below.
