1953 Ford 8N PTO (first time on forum)

This is what he has done to the hydraulic PTO pump because it would not go up.
1 rebuilt PTO pump, New hydraulic fluid.
2New lift cylinder, piston & oring
3 turned cam follower pin around
It will now lift all the way, but very slow. It won't hold unless it is pumping. When you ease down on clutch it starts leaking down.
Had it apart half a dozen times or more, that lift cover darn heavy and a bear to get back in place.
So happy to learn a great technique from forum member here about going through inspection plate.
Thanks for any help you can give. Bought a manual but doesn't talk PTO.

Find out where there leak is. Remove side
inspection plate. The one with the dipstick. Use a
flashlight. With the tractor running, look in and
see if it is leaking from the top (ram cylinder).
If so you will have to remove the lift cover again
and renew the ram piston rings. There are other
places it can leak but that is the most likely.

No such thing as a 1953 8N the last one was made in 1952. In 1953 they came out with the Jubilee.

Check to see if leaking past the relief valve or gasket between lift cover and axle housing.

What pump parts did you replace and where did you buy the parts?

Did you remove the valve chambers? Did you replace the poppet valves? If so did you thoroughly clean the valve chambers? Did you replace the chamber gaskets? How tightly did you torque the chamber bolts?

Thanks, felt like must be a leak. But all brand new and hasn't been used.
I'll give it look.

hese are the primary places to look for leaks:

One other thing I would check. Make sure the control valve is free and moves in and out. I worked on a pump once that had some rust on the control valve, and it wouldn't move freely, so it wasn't letting the lift come up very fast. Cleaned it up with Crokus Cloth (SP) and cleaned the bore too, and the pump is still working fine after many years. Best of Luck!!!

So then I am guessing it has the front mount distributor which makes it a 48 to an early 50. Some time around April of 50 they went to the side mount distributor

Could be over pressure relief valve..slide 1/2"
clear tube over end of relief valve--raise
implement-as it leaks down see if hyd oil gets
inside the tube--if it does, replace the relief
valve...yes, I have had new ones that were bad and
I've had new ones that didn't last but a few
months..

Always buy such parts from CNH.

The aftermarket parts are not worth the time to install.

Easy way to find out the year for sure is get the serial number off the left side of the engine then look under research and info on the left of this page then go to serial numbers the ford then 8N and see where your number fit in

1950 model

The 2 smallest ones are spacers, without them the long one can leak, and that's in the high pressure side, thus will make the lift leak
