8N starting problem

I changed oil in my 8N and left it in the shop for a few days. I attempted to start it yesterday and after it hit a few times it died. I tried to restart and it would only click the solenoid. I put the charger on 2 amps and left it for a while even though it showed full charged. An hour later I tried again finding I had left the key on while charging it. The alternate was hot to my touch. It still will only click the solenoid. New battery with clean terminals. Your thoughts?

Thing like 6 or 12 volts and front or side mount distributor helps us help you. Only a click says poor connections or weak battery or bad starter. Try a jumper from the battery to the starter and if that works work you way back to where a poor connection is

" Your thoughts? "

My thoughts are that it will be very difficult to start a tractor w/ burned points and/or a melted coil. And a dead battery.

Check out tips 38, 49 & 60 at the link.

Post back w/ more info too: front or side distributor?

that 2a charge was completely consumed by the alt excite line and points/ignition coil, furthere burning the battery.

try 'turning the key OFF', then recharge the battery.

check the points and coil.

make sure your alternator #1 line has isolation from the key and is not for some reason always on.

clean up all connections and terminal ends.

post back.

I cleaned both ends of the battery cables and snugged up the wire coming off the starter button. Fired right up. Lucked out I think. Thanks guys. gm
