1939 9n front wheels

after bush hogging the fields and driving tractor back the front wheels where tracking opposite of each other. they where fine before using the tractor help!

since it's a 9n I'm betting the steering gears are
wore out and have jump a few teeth.

I'm sure some of the other guys will have some
different ideas.

The procedure for retiming the steering gear is very
well explained in the FO4 manual. Basically you
remove the draglinks from the sector arms. Then move
one sector arm all the way forward and the opposite
all the way rearward and then bring them back
together.

If you don't have full travel after doing this procedure, the teeth have jumped. The likely cause for this is extreme wear of the teeth.

(reply to post at 22:12:43 09/17/14) [/the only thing that i can say that may happened i did bump a small pine tree while cutting. wasnt that bad and dont know if that wouuld have caused it. If so would this re-timing procedure still work. quote]

Sounds like worn steering sector gears and shaft
gear. Here is a pic showing a good steering shaft
gear on the right vs a very worn one on the left.
I've seen them with gears on both the shaft and
the sectors worn to a razor edge. They should be
about 1/8" thick or more on the edges.

When they are this worn, they could easily jump a
tooth or two when a front wheel hits a hard bump.

The gear on the left looks a lot like mine did. I replaced all three gears back in 99. If I remember it cost me around $475.00 for the parts and the shipping.

thanks for all the info i will be going up to my cabin in a few days and will check it out. thankful for all the knowledge on this site.
