I know these are the new emission standards, but why is everyone so concerned about getting a tier 3 machine?

Tier 4, like most federale mandated nonsense, has increased the price of new machines, yet again.

Folks want to avoid the price increase and the added complexity and maintenance.

I bought a new tractor about 18 months ago, not because I needed it, but because I will need it and want nothing to do with Tier 4.

like Dean said, cost is one issue.
(Someone correct the following if I use the wrong terms)
With the Kubotas I was researching, the
'Diesel particulate filter' was most concerning to me.
Has a computer which monitors it.
Very regularly, it will need 'cleaning', so the computer
will superheat the exhaust system to 1200 degrees to 'clean' it.
I don't want anything in my sheds 1200 degrees.
And on a small compact tractor like a Kubota, that muffler is very close to:
the sheetmetal and its paint.
and all the aluminum engine parts.
1200 degrees can't do them any good over time.
ok, I'll just disable it...nope
if the computer sees it dirty and needing to be recycled,
and it can't.....
it will shut the engine down.....

hopefully, in a few years they will find a better system, til then no thanks

Whut they said.... A catalytic converter has no place on a tractor...

On the ones I was looking at they moved the fuel tank under the tractor and put a fat converter under the hood... Unless one could get a hold of a computer program to link up with there tractor they best cuddle up with there dealer... This is a new error for tractor mechanics they have allot to learn.. AC it another fad right now most are not tooled up are have the knowledge to do AC work... The local dealer was going to haul one over for me to look at but I told him what was wrong with it. I think I have him convinced there is money to be made in engine performance and AC diagnostics he just has to convince his mechanic...

I can not imagine how much a converter are a AC compressor job is going to cost to replace along with the associated parts and labor... The cost of fixing there mistakes and warranty labor is going to be a hard wad to chew and digest...

My L4600 has a tag that states its Tier 4 but does not have tier 4 emissions

Here to stay and continually more burdensome.

The bureaucrats are imposing the nonsense on continually smaller machines.

Eventually, your walk behind lawn mower will be regulated and cost Lord knows what.

Stay tuned.

Really? I'm pretty sure it's here to stay.

Yep,,, What I meant was its becoming a popular option for the general public that does not depend on a tractor to make a living are work the land... I am seeing lots of compact tractor around here with a cab...

I don't think that's a fad. I think it's here to stay.

Thanks everyone. I talked to a guy at a dealership last year who was trying to sell me a tier 3, saying that they didnt know how many more they were gonna get. Just not practical for me to buy one right now. I really wish i could justify it, but i just dont use a tractor that much. Guess i will stick with the antiques for a while.

Not a big deal in Sanford but up here plowing snow in the winter makes a cab a real attractive option ;-) Cabs were even popular options for the N-series way back when....

However a quick price quote from Kubota on a Grand L3560 says the heated and air conditioned factory installed cab is an $8K option  That buys a lot of long johns and sunscreen
