Stop and Go 8N ?

Forum Members,
Am having trouble with the 8N. Has a 12 volt electrical system and has been overhauled and runs well most of the time. It has become hard to start and on occasion will stutter when idling. Is it electrical or fuel related? Could it be the ignition ballast? Have had a lot of experience with N tractors but not sure about this one!

2 fast tests you can do to get an idea on direction are:

1, when it starts idling rough or other probls like you report.. see if a lil tug of choke helps.

2, any time you get runtime problems. especially hard starts. check spark. it's fast and easy.. and if it's not a spark issue.. you only wasted a couple minutes. Any time you stall and can't restart. immediately check spark too.

have you cheked for tank vacume as well?

SG,
Thanks for the reply. As for the first test, seems if I open up the throttle it seems to clear it out for a while. As for the second test, will try tomorrow.

Run the checks soundguy suggested; if those don't ID the problem, post back w/ more info:

Front or side distributor?

While it's probably not a ballast resistor problem......what are you running? The pic is a ballast resistor. Is that what you have? Any others?

Bruce,
Thanks for the reply! It is a '47 8N with a front mount distributor. I can see the ballast located behind the dash. Will also clean the carb today. Last time I cleaned it there was a fine gray material in the carb bowl?

Any other resistors?

Take a look inside your tank. That gray material could be from improperly applied/low quality tank liner that is peeling off.
