PTO Will NOT PULL OUT

Hi! I'm trying to replace the PTO shaft on my 49 Ford 8n. I've removed the 4 bolts in the rear, placed the tractor in neutral and attempted to remove the shaft., It pulls out about 4 inches and is stuck.

Also the transmission fluid is milky white.
Any suggestions?

Do a search here for stuck pto shaft. You'll likely find a lot of hits.
Those pto shafts are known for twisting and then wont come out of the hydraulic pump.
So don't reef on it too hard or you'll wreck your pump.
Sometimes you have to split the tractor and cut it in half with a sawzall.

Marc.......first off, white milky tranny means WATER in the oil. 5-gals of hydro-tranny oil. Surprizingly enuff, water gitts into the tractor thru the 3-point upper link under yer butt bucket.

Drain the little square plug in the diffy FIRST, cuz it'll peeee with some degree of accuracy. Then remove and drain the 3-in tranny plug and finally drain the flat 3-in hydraulic pump plug. Suggest using a WIDE plastic catch basin. (kiddy wading pool)

As fer yer non-removal PTO shaft, its been TWISTED by using a BRUSH-HOG without an ORC. (over running coupler) Most likely you will haffta go in thru yer 6-in roundy dipstick hole with a sabersaw. (which beats a hacksaw) Once you've cut the PTO shaft you can then pull the PTO out the diffy. Then drop yer square plate and clean'er good.

Remember, modern PTO 6-spline are 1-3/8" versa the earlier 9N/2N/8N of 1-1/8". The PTO shafts are the same length.......Dell, the ORC preacher

Dell,
I'm curious why you'd say that - how using or not using an ORC would make any difference in causing a shaft to twist.

THanks for the info... The shaft appears to be stuck from going in or out. Will I hurt anything if I use a hammer or rubber mallet and push it pack in. (Just to close it up...)

Dear Lord! Please do not beat on it with a hammer! You will do what I did last year, first it will start knocking after you get it back in...then the pump will come apart all to pieces. Rubber mallet might be ok. Try loosening the pump bolts a bit and maybe you can work it back in.

Twisted splines.

Twenth-five years or so ago, I needed to torch the PTO shaft off both before and behind the pump in order to drop the pump fo enable shaft replacement in my 51.

Once the pump was out, I was able to taper the stup shaft in the pump with a grinder and drive it out of the pump with a sledge hammer. I used a large hedge stump with a hole bored in it for the shaft to go into.

It took serious wailing to get it out but there was no pump damage and I used the pump for 20 or so more years before first rebuild about 5 years ago.

Can't imagine how the use or non-use of an ORC could have anything to do with twisted PTO shaft splines resulting from bush hog use.

doggie........the IMMENSE momentum of the circular blades of a brush hog will BACK TWIST the PTO shaft when you de-clutch to go around the corner of the barn or fencepost or creek bank. The ORC (over running coupler) is a 1-way ratchet device that allows the momentum of the blades to continue to swing as the tractor slows down. Otherwize the strength of the PTO shaft is insufficient to prevent twisting as the hydraulic pump continues to pump....ie....hydraulic oil is INCOMPRESSIBLE......Dell, the ORC preacher

back in my reckless youth I bush hogged every summer with a 8N after dad quit farming. never bent the PTO shafty. no ORC either.

tape a hammer and tap ont he bearing carrier a lil bit and see if you are ultra lucky it is just hung from a small twist. if your luck is like the rest of us. it's twisted enough that you will have to cut the shaft before and after the pump then drive the slug out after dropping pump.

alternately. if you are pulling the shaft ONLY to do the seal.. with it out 4" you might get the bearing carrier off to do the seal. :)

So I have another question. My Sawsaw is quite large.
Is there a saw that we can use to cut out the shaft without taking off the large tires? My sawsaw will not fit in there and I'm guessing that a jig saw will not do the job.
Thanks!

According to what I have heard here, in order to remove the PTO shaft that is twisted, I need to remove the 4-bolt plate where the dip stick is and cut off the PTO shaft behind the hydraulic pump with a saw saw. (If it is twisted badly, then I might have to cut off both sides.) Looking at where I have to cut, the saw saw is a bit too long. So I was wondering if there was a saw I could use that would fit, or if I have to take off the tractor tires...

i don't see how the tires will be an issue as the shaft part you are cutting is internal to the tractor center section.

Go to a rental place and see what they have, you might find one that will fit.
