8N coolant leak @ manifold

I am getting very close to getting my 48 running after taking a 6 year break and rebuild. I had the engine rebuilt by a highly recommended engine guy and I have had the engine finished for 6 years and stored inside in a conditioned space. I just added my 3rd gallon of coolant and noticed a leak at the number four manifold stud which happened to be the only one missing that I added. I guess it was removed during the rebuild and not replaced. My simple long winded question is this. Is it possible that my problem is bigger than just sealing the fourth stud with a high temp sealant? I am hoping that I don't have to take the head off. Thanks Rick

Unless the threads are messed up or you got the wrong stud, chances are the sealant is all you need.

Mine does that too.
I've put in new studs, tried permatex orange, then
black, but it still leaks.
Let us know if you find something that works.

Looks like your beloved beast is right in the house. :)

How about this Loctite product:

10ml bottle of high strength threadlock ` STUDLOCK ++ ` ( stud lock high strength stud lock for larger threaded parts )

Stud lock ( high strength industrial anaerobic thread lock and sealant ) for all metal bolts, threads, nuts studs

High strength anaerobic cure threadlock sealant , RED , STRONG , thread lock and seal compound for threadlocking all metal parts, gel non drip formula

Single part thread sealant threadlock product for locking all threaded parts such as nuts and bolts against vibration loosening and fatigue / wear [b:035576d463]and to seal threads against leakage of fluids or gasses[/b:035576d463]

This stud lock / studlock / high strength red threadlock has the [b:035576d463]added advantage against mechanical locking, not only being higher performance, lower cost it also stops leakage of fluids and gasses past the threads, as well as preventing any build up of corrosion between the two threaded parts.[/b:035576d463]

thanks guys the threads are in great shape in both the block and the stud. I have several types of products I can use. My worry is that the stud hole leaking is a sign of a larger problem like a damaged head gasket, which would have been installed in controlled conditions.

No chance of it leaking into other parts of the block?

Thanks Rick

Don't recall exactly what it's called but is a product by Permatex that we used to use on headbolts that went into waterjackets on auto engines at the machineshop from a life time ago.

I believe it's PFTE or something similar. It's sold by Permatex at auto parts stores in a small white tube similar to a threadlocker tube. Works great. It's white in color.
