Fuel filters

Are the three filter screens in a 9N progressively finer? My tank screen is missing so my sediment bowl screen is usually doing most of the work. Today my elbow screen plugged up for the first time ever. It must be stuff that fit thru the sediment bowl screen? At least it didn't make it to the carburetor.

I actually measured mine once because I thought they might be.
Mine were not, but then they were probably changed over the years.

You're obviously right about the elbow screen getting dirt from
the upstream screens. It can't really come from anywhere else
with the possible exception of a dirty/rusty fuel line.

You said its the first time it has plugged, which makes me want
to ask if you have taken it out and cleaned it before.
If you haven't had to do that, then a lot of what was in it could
have been in it for a long time and a bit of additional could have
piled on and clogged it up.

Ive never compared but why not replace it the whole assembly. They're cheap. After seeing what gets by the 1st screen and settles into the bowl in some cases maybe you would want to pull the tank and clean it if theres that much getting by?

The tractor sat unused for about 20 years and the tank was half full of gunk with some rust. I cleaned the tank as well as I could but there is still some rust flushing out. I've cleaned the sediment bowl screen several times and the rust paste is diminishing as the tractor sees more use. The elbow screen was new when I rebuilt the carb to get the tractor running again.

Here's what I did with my 8n tank...took it off.. threw some rocks in it with some solution...strapped it to the rear tire of another 8n that I had the rear end jacked up on and let the rear tire spin it for a few hours...of course I had to shake the rocks out when I was done....but a rinse with gas after the rocks removed I haven't had a problem in 2 yrs.....except running it low on gas w/o looking :)

Well, new elbow and screen rules out the partially plugged idea.
I have a couple of tanks out here that hold gas and don't leak.
I'll stick my inspection camera in them tomorrow and see what
they look like inside. If one looks good you're welcome to it.

I've also had 1 tank that had a tiny piece of something go down the inlet tube and restrict flow. Take your bright light and shine it down the tiny tube thats missing the screen. Royse will hook ya up if he has a good one. If he doesn't I have one.

I dont like Fords design on the sediment screen in the tank. The screen is a small round tube that is open at the top. It only screens the larger sediment out when the fuel nears or is at the reserve level or lower than the top edge of the screen. Other wise the fuel spills both over the top as well as through the screen when the gas is at a level that is higher than the screen.

When you drive your machine, the vibration of the engine and just the normal shaking of the machine will unsettle any sediment in the tank and cause it to suspend in the gas.

I plug up the top of the screen tube so the fuel is always forced through the screen.
I also don't place to much faith on the screen inside of the sediment bowl. Its not a 100% fit.

The screen fitting at the carb is a 100 percent enclosed screen and will capture everything larger than its mesh size.
Anything that passes through must obviously be smaller than any of the orifices that are internal to the carb and just get burned up in the cylinder.

I took a look when I got home from work.
None of the ones I have are rust free.
One of them would be usable but has some rust in the corners.
If it stops raining I can take some pictures and email them to
you if you're interested in it. You might want new if you're going
through the work of taking it out of the hood and replacing it.

Thanks for the offers but I think the tank I have will be OK. It's structurally sound with a bit of surface rust. For as little as I use the tractor I'll probably have to clean the bowl once a year or so.

If you had two tractors, you'd only have to clean it once every two years.
Just sayin' ;)

Convince the other half and you're good to go!
You're on your own with that task though!

"I haven't had a problem in 2 yrs.....except running it low on gas w/o looking "..

Now imagine who would do that? About 15 years ago the county road my drive way came off from, was a dirt road. The county would scrape it one in a blue moon. The road would get the washboard effects close to where it met the paved road, so.....brilliant me would take the 8N out there and scrape it down with the 6' box blade. Do a nice job too. One Saturday morning, I was merrily scraping away and sputter sputter ...WTH. I fiddled with sparks etc and the "last" thing I did was peek into the gas tank. Dad burn it! Yep, it was really low. Another 5 gallons and it was good to go again. Of course that was after every dang neighbor that lived down the road went by grinning at me and snicking! Moral of the story is: if the N is going to break down/run out of sparkies/gas...it will do it at the worst possible time and the most people will drive by!

It's paved now :)
