oil pan gasket

I tried searching but didn't turn up any obvious hits so here's the question... my oil pan gasket is overlapping the rope seals on both front and back...is this normal or do I need to trim? I'm so ready to get her back running and earning her keep lol

Here is one opinion..
My front crank pulley had a grove wore in it by
the old crank seal. I had the grove welded and
turned down to the original diameter.
I soaked the new oil seals in oil and pressed them
in good with a big socket. I trimmed the excess
seal with a razor blade to about a 1/8 to 1/16
sticking up above the block and oil pan. I
overlapped the oil pan gasket on top of the rope
seals.

I was told that the old rope seals are tough and
not prone to leak, especially when new. HTH Rick H

Ok, thanks. I was assuming the rope seals needed trimmed but didn't know about the overlap of the gaskets. I will plug along and hopefully have it all together this weekend....hopefully

I trim the pan gasket to just meet the rope seal
and then add a dab of blue silicone gasket sealer
where they meet. That has worked for me.

Gasket overlaps... trim the seal as close as you can get it if a little stands proud its ok because its almost impossible to trim it flush with out trimming off to much... This is not a my best guess.... But if anyone has a best guess explain why you would trim the gasket are leave the seal proud..

Always test fit the crank with out the upper haft of the seal installed...

Av8, There is a great tutorial on the 'other' Ford
site. This tutorial covers rebuilding the engine and
the question you posed. This site won't let me post
a link, but if you email me I will give you the
link. Hobo gave the short answer. If you want the
long answer email me.

I went ahead and let it overlap and cut the rope seals leaving them proud. my thinking on cutting the gasket is there is a potential for a leak eventually between the rope seals and the gasket...with the overlap there isn't. We shall see. Lol
