Pull starting a 9N

Just wondering, as I only have one good battery at this time, can I successfully pull start my 9n?
The 9N has sat all summer and I don't have plans to use it much over the winter, but I would like to get her a little exercise before the long winters nap. Thank you for any information.

I'm not sure I understand your question.........

You will need a charged battery in the tractor to power the ignition circuit.

If the battery doesn't have enough in it to turn the starter over chances are good it won't have enough to power the ignition either.

But, to pull start it......

Key on, gas on, third or fourth gear, eaaaaase out on the clutch at about 5 mph. If you 'pop' the clutch in a lower gear, you will launch yourself over the hood.

If the battery in the 9N is dead no you can not pull start it because you need power to make the ignition system to work. So if your going to pull it and what your pulling it with has the only good battery your still dead in the water.

Unless your 9N has been converted to a Select-O-Speed transmission (LOL!) of course you can pull start it. Just put it in 3rd gear and have at it.

If the battery has any power left in at all, the generator will kick in when the engine starts to turn over supplying power to the ignition.

Yep, 3rd gear, key on, gas on. Be careful that the pulling driver doesn't go 30 mph. You only need 5 mph or so.

The REAL question, before I would give him an answer, is "alternator or generator?". Alternator =99.44% no.
Generator=99% yes.

Yes.

As long as the battery has sufficient charge to supply the ignition, you can pull start your N.

Use the numerically highest gear (third in the case of your 9N).

Get you a nasty stinky old diesel.
They don't even need a battery to run.
This one was burned when I bought it but I got it running again with parts from a doner tractor. Just towed it to start it.

Even an alternator has residual magnetism. Just jumper the field to the output stud on a test bench and watch it charge. This is on the old ones with external regulator.

fcourse the 10DN would under that scenario, as the battery it is "charging" ,as you say, is supplying the field. On standard 10SI (the alt of choice for conversions, the tiny residual will not produce enough to kick them off into charging. The standard 10SI needs about 1.5 to 2v to kick off & even at high rpm, they residual produces about half of that. So, pull start, full dead battery, std 10SI, or even 10DN properly connected, is a no go.
Modified, 'on the bench', etc. is another chapter.

reminds me of the day when my old neighbor tried
to crank start his super C with out a battery. he
got a good work out!
