8n lift cylinder

Is it any harder to put new rings in the lift cylinder than it is to put new engine rings in? Also can I just unbolt the top cover? Or is there something else I need to do and last of all is the lift cylinder in the top cover?

"Is it any harder to put new rings in the lift cylinder than it is to
put new engine rings in?"
Nope. Even easier to me. They're thick rings.
While you have it out you may want to consider upgrading to the
newer NAA style piston and O-ring/washer seal.

"can I just unbolt the top cover?"
On an 8N, that's about it. You may want help lifting it.
Take out the peripheral bolts, not the nuts under the seat.
Those hold the cylinder to the top cover.
Be careful not to bend the control arm and you will want the right
side inspection cover off when putting it back in so you make sure
the control arm gets back into the little cup where it belongs.
Watch the little tube and O-ring where the fluid comes up too.
Dry gaskets when going back together.

"is the lift cylinder in the top cover?"
Yes, held on by those nuts. I would replace the gaskets between
it and the top cover while you have it out. Also dry.

The ram cylinder mounting bolts as well as the
lift cover mounting bolts and the pump mounting
bolts are all specified for 53-60 lbs./ft.

I sneak up on them in 5 lb./ft increments from
about 40 lbs./ft.

Fortunately all are externally accessible so you
can go over them another couple fo times even if
you have already reassembled your tractor.

check the lift cyl bore and hone if needed.. i recomend the naa piston and washers.

post back if the cyl is scared beyond honing. or if already honed past limit.

Thanks everyone I don't have it apart yet I was just asking cause I thought I'd do when I fix the lift arm leak. The lift just drops so fast it dropped in 10 mi with the bush hog on it the tractor was off but still shouldn't drop that fast

Why would one leave it raised when the tractor is not running? 10 minutes for a bush hog is not too bad anyway. I always lower mine when I shut the tractor down. No reason not to and it is safer!

I'm not a very experienced mechanic, and I thought it was a fairly easy job. If you can get help to lift the cover off great, but I took mine off and put it back on by myself. I think its much easier to take off and on than the hood without help. There isn't much to it once you get it off. I honed my lift cyl out and replace with the naa oring, been working great all summer. Might wanna check your relief valve before you take it apart, much easier to change while you have the cover off. If you get 10 min with the bush hog on I don't know that its really worth your time to do it unless you just want to.

If that's the only reason for doing it, I would leave it alone.
You don't have to remove that top cover to work on the lift arm
leak and you could cause yourself a lot more problems than you fix.

If there are other problems or you need to transport the mower
down the road any distance then I would lean the other way.
If you just want to fix it so you know how to do it, you'll get plenty
of help here on the forum. We all learned somehow.
