MY 8N DOES HAVE AN INDUSTRIAL ENGINE.IT HAS A TAG ON BELL HOUSING THAT SAYS INDUSTRIAL ENGINE AND GIVES SERIAL NUMBER AND MODEL#.
I WILL HONE CYLINDERS AND PUT IN NEW PISTONS AND RINGS.
WHAT I WANT TO KNOW WHAT IS DIFFERENT BETWEEN 4 RING AND 3 RING PISTONS.
I WAS TOLD THEY WERE INTERCHANGEABLE.I CAN GET OVER SIZE IN 4 RING BUT NOT 3.
NEED TO KNOW.

Most people feel the 3 ring is a better choice because the 4 ring (which has an additional oil ring near the bottom of the piston) tends to wipe too much oil off the cylinder wall causing faster wear of the cylinder.

Because he said it was an industrial engine and they have no sleeves stock and are sometimes just over bored and over sized rings and pistons are used.As far as 4 ring pistons what do you think a long lasting Cummins engine uses?I have also had 4 ringers in my 2N for over 50+ years. So go with them and they will last as long as you do.

My industrial engine had the thin steel sleeves in it.

IT IS POSSIBLE THAT AS TRACTORS WERE ASSEMBLED THERE WERE NO ENGINES WITH SLEEVES AVAILABLE AT THE TIME SO IT WAS DECIDED TO PUT IN A SLEEVE LESS INDUSTRIAL ENGINE OR IT WAS ORDERED THAT WAY FROM FACTORY.WE GET CARS THAT WAY.
THEY COULD HAVE REPLACED THE SLEEVED ENGINE WITH A SLEEVE LESS FOR SOME UNKNOWN REASON.
WHO KNOWS.

QUESTION IS WHERE AND IF I CAN GET OVER SIZED PISTONS AND RINGS FOR A 3 RING PISTON.

I wouldn't worry about 4 ring versus 3 ring pistons. Between 1939 abd 1953 tens of thousands if not millions of Ford and Mercury flathead engines came of the production line with 4 ring pistons. Hotrod suppliers are still supplying them today in just about any oversize you might need..
