8n Transmission pre-load

Greetings Forum Chums!!

Like the old saying....better to keep silent..and be thought a fool...than to open your mouth...and remove all doubt......BUT...I am at a loss...took the tranny apart that I am going to use in the 8n High Crop....bearings and races....pristine...65 years plus years or no...the tractor had very little use.....replaced the whole gear cluster from another parts transmission to take care of the one ouch....a half tooth missing from forth gear.....I understand dial indicators....and end play.....but this pre-load torque thing is a mystery..I get torque wrenches....but can someone make clear to me what the IT manual is getting at with setting the running torque of the shaft?? ....not to get it moving....but afterwards???
After you stop laughing.....BE KIND!!!!!!

Set the main and countershafts up for zero end play and a very slight drag and forget about all the other pain in the rear procedures they come up with. It will be just fine.

You can't beat John's advise but just so you know setting the running torque is generally measured by wrapping a string around the shaft and using a pull scale on the string to measure the rolling drag. On these slow turning tractors it is far less important than on a vehicle driving over the road at high RPMs.
