8n gear question

Greetings Forum Chums,

What to do....got the parts tractor tranny out for the transplant to the 8n High Crop....the good news.....inside looks pristine....nice and tight....no slop.....now the rub....fourth gear has one half of on tooth broken off....somebody shifted on the fly at least once!!
Do I tear it apart....put in another gear four??...or live with it??

If you are going to use fourth gear, I would change it.
Especially if you are planning on using it under any load.
Others may have differing opinions, but that's mine. :)
I also may have one here if you need it, not sure though.
I haven't opened the trans to know if it is good yet.

It is not that hard of a job when you already have the trans out and maybe you can find the chipped tooth and get it out of the trans. I would replace it in a heartbeat!

does it make noise in 4th gear. you only use 4th for a road gear. probably very seldom you will want that much speed. try it and see. you can tear the 4th out of the other tranny if it makes a clicking noise, and install it in this one.

I bought a truck once with the rear end chunk out and in the bed of the truck 1-1/2 ton truck.

The ring gear had 1/3 of one tooth broken off the ring gear. I needed to use the truck so I put it all back together and began to run it. Never made any noise. That was about 25 years ago and I still use it occoisianaly. Hauled many a load of gravel in the dump truck. Too many to count.

The 8N transmission is a constant mesh design.

Shifting on the fly could cause wear to the engagement teeth on the sliding collars but not to the reduction gears, which are in constant engagement.

Gear damage is usually due to metal particles in the oil.

Whether it will cause trouble in the future is anyone's guess.
