8n Starter question

I just converted from a 6 volt positive ground to a 12 volt negative ground and everything went very well and the tractor starts and runs better than it ever did. However now the starter motor is not behaving. When I hit the starter button the motor winds out but does not engage. I can get it to engage eventually by giving it short bursts at the stater button. It will take several attempts and then it will engage.I will take any advice on my next steps to pursue with this.My research prior to installing the 12 volt system was you do not have to replace the starter from the 6 volt system. It did not do this before the conversion so perhaps the change has damaged it in some way. Thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge with me.

had one like this on my 9n recently. the bendix was stuck just a little bit on the end, it's supposed to rotate down like a corkscrew to engage the flywheel. once it freed up (mine I could just free up by hand so it didn't take much to make it stick) I sprayed it down with graphite and it's been fine ever since.

jubbie.......surprizingly enuff, the 8N starter motor is very ROBUST. It doesn't matter, positive (+) or negative (-) ground, it will ALWAYS turn the correct direction. Isn't that amazing???

And even more amazing, it will turn just FASTER with 12-volts for easier starting versa original 6-volts positive ground.

As fer yer current problem, 2-things. The LONG starter shaft that the Bendix rides on must be SQUEEKY clean. Rinse well with spray brake cleaner. Simple, eh?

The other thing per yer description, is yer starter Bendix spring is broken, but this is NOT common.

Before installing the starter motor (8-in screws) clean and any paint and corrosion between the end of the motor and the crankcase housing hole........starter Dell
