Front mount EI question

Don't want to start a points vs EI pissing match just have a question.

Do all petronix kits eliminate the square coil and use a round one?

I plan to keep the tractor 6v neg ground, and am debating switching to EI simply because quality iggy parts are hard to find nowadays.

o, most do not.

That's a link to the kit I was looking at.

So that would leave the tractor looking completely stock from the outside?

NO, not unless you buy the complete kit for more $$$$.

"quality iggy parts are hard to find nowadays"

There's all sorts of suppliers on the 'net that have the SMP/Blue Steak points, and will be glad to send them to you, if none of the local auto parts stores will help you.

For hobby use, there's no reason a good set of points won't last 5 or ten years, anyhow. (Unless you have a "stall it and leave the ignition switch "ON" tenancy!)

I don't have any problem finding quality ignition parts.
Voltage regulators are another story however.
But to answer your question, you would need to buy the kit
that includes the round can coil conversion or roll your own.

"You sure it's neg. ground."

Should be and that's the way it left the factory and what someone has done to it are two different things!

The part you noted is for an 8N with 6 volt
positive ground electrical system and front
mounted distributor. This system would leave the
square can coil in place. I would not recommend EI
for a 6 volt system. A slight drop in voltage and
it will not fire. I have converted all my 8Ns to
12 volts and the front mounts to EI. EI on a 12
volt system works fantastic. Turns over great and
fires up quickly in the winter. A 6 volt system
with quality points would do the same thing but
requires much more maintenance.

Thanks for the replies.

Yes I just saw that the slightest voltage drop could cause the EI to not fire.

Started a new thread to address my current weak spark situation

If I were gonna go EI I would want a round can coil 6 are 12V...
I would not buy into the myth of 6V EI's having low voltage issues I have had my hands on one and it fired well at 4V's..

I buy all my EI conversions from advance auto because they have a good return policy for me its no questions asked :D
