Wiring up my generator

I'm not understanding the wiring diagram in my book. I have a A and a F stamped on my generator with a wire in the back that is unstamped. What my book shows is the armature wire is in the back, but a A stamp is on the side. What my book also shows is that the ground is what I thought was the field and the field is what I thought was the ground. Can you help me get this straightened out? When I took my generator apart to check the brushes, I noticed that where the F is stamped on the case...there is nothing. Just the stud (bolt). The one in the back with no stamp, goes to the brushes. The one with the A goes to the windings in the case. Is it wired wrong? It is a 6 volt positive ground system.

If you are describing what you see accurately, (and I am understanding you correctly), it seems like you have a "MUTT" generator!

The "A" terminal will connect to a brush, the "F" terminal to a wire from the field coils in the generator's "belly", and the "GROUND" terminal (if present) will simply be an uninsulated stud sticking out of the case/belly.

That's the way I thought it should be, but the stamps on the case had me confused. This was my Dad's tractor and it was having problems with points, coils, voltage regulator, and battery. It has been wired wrong for a long time. Thank you for your help.
