Should have done this in the first place (pics)

Revisiting my what would you do thread, this time with pictures. The rust through is about 18" long and the pressure in the tire is pushing the bead part of the rim out about 3/4". Like I said the tires have good tread but the casings are about shot.

That by the way is the hub I purchased from Lisa! Can't thank her enough!

So what do you think? I really don't want to play with a rim in that kinda of shape so I'm going to replace that one and maybe the other after I get the tire off and can get a good look at it. I use this tractor all the time for farm work to include plowing and planting deer plots. Don't like poor tires too much.

Won't take much field work to start things deteriorating fast. I
wouldn't be afraid of fixing the rim if it was winter and I was
bored. Those tires won't make a dismount, so I guess you run
it until either the tire or rim goes. If it were me I would go to the
hardware store and get some chain to wrap around the rim
and tire to bolt it together. Get small chain so you don't have a
bounce every time it comes around. That is IF they aren't hat
rims and have a slot to run the chain through. I don't
remember noticing.

The boys at the Coop did one of my rims and it looks factory and brand new. They were bored and I had the Farmall there anyway.

Check out either Minneapolis or st cloud cl I saw
this morning someone 20 miles s of Fergus had a rear
loop rim and front rim for $100. I forget which one
I saw it on

I take that back it was on mankato cl and in
nicollet....its been a long day. Must have been
something else that was a good deal by fergus....have you checked with the guy on cl by foxhome? I know he had a set of 12.4x28's on loop rims not long ago.

(quoted from post at 04:30:32 09/01/14) I wouldn't use either of them in that shape.

Kinda what I figured. Winding down for the year here. So I've got a few months to decide. Think I'll check around for a couple of used rims and mount new tires.

Lisa, couldn't find the one near Foxhome. Do you have and decent ones?

Rick

It rained here the other day and I was surprised at the small lake that collected in my restored 13" wide hat rims cause the tractor was tilted sideways. No wonder the hat box channels rusted out; the water would have just poured into the channels through the bolt holes -- especially if a nut was bottom center when parked.

the back side of my rims don't have much of a surface for water to collect cause the hat ring isn't far from the edge. I put silicone under the bolt heads but I should have used silicone on the deep out-sides of the rims too. I did use oil soaked leather washers there too (one under the cast disk and one under the flat washer) but silicone would have been a good idea for the lug nut side too.

I'll get the link off cl when I get home in a few
hours. I have 1 good loop rim and a set of hat rims
that appear good on the outside. I'd have to pull
them and get the old hard tires off to see how good
the inside is. I don't have any tires. I know theres
a big tractor salvage place by barnsville too I'll
have to find the name when I get home. Will post
back in a few hours.

Me? I'd get new tires/tubes with loop rims already installed.... HAT RIMS are over-rated.. If you can't do without weight, do the bolt-on approach...

Just remember, free advice is worth what you pay for it... :)

Yea, new tire are going on it. It's used for plowing, cultivating and disking. It does need weight unless I can find something a little newer and heavier to do the heavy work. I learned a long time ago that I have fewer problems with new tires than I do with used.

Lisa, thanks. I think I'm going to go with good used or new rims and new rubber.

I don't blame ya. I bought a 9n with loader and hideous back blade just for the new rears and loop rims and chains. Of course they're loaded. But I swapped them with the husbands 51 with Sherman combo (project still) that were weather checked. I turned around and sold the tractor a week later for $300 more than I paid for it and ended up with new tires, loop rims, and chains....

Well I'm such a nice guy I think you should just let me borrow those rims and tires    .

Yup, the more I look at it the more I think that I should just buy new rims too.

Rick

Haha I won't argue that your a nice guy...but I bet I'd be in the dog house if I got rid of them and had to buy new ones :) of course it would give me a good reason to buy another tractor.
