hey about the hand crank

in fiddling with the '52 8N I rummaged up a hand crank for it out of my stuff, handy to turn the engine with when setting the point gap, but that's when we noticed, if one came with the tractor new, where in the heck did the 8n store it on the tractor?? wasn't any clips anywhere, and this n is all factory original right down to the original ford top link on the 3 point

Not too smart over here but I'm thinking an 8N wouldn't have used a hand crank. How ever a wartime 2N with a mag would have.

Yes 8n's used a hand crank. I've seen them tucked up under the hood towards the front. Not sure if that's where they were meant to go

ill take a look under there tomorrow, I thought most of the n series came with them even though they weren't used with battery ignition unless the battery was dead or like I did, used to turn the engine by hand for setting the point gap ect hand cranking a battery ignition tractor would probably be a chore compared to a mag ignition, requiring the engine to spin over faster to get a spark, but this n is so original it should have one if it has a place for it

If it had a dead battery you could crank it till the cows came home and not start it but if the battery was to low to spin it over but had some volts a hand crank could still start it. Hand crank if all was right worked ok but if the timing was off by a little it could break your arm in a heart beat. But yes for a tool to set points and check other things it was good to have. As for where to store it I have NEVER seen any place for them like many of the other tractors I own

Thanks Lisa, like I admitted, I aint too smart. But now I be more smarter :)
(maybe i should just stick to something i USED to be good at, wise cracking)

While it was not an 8N.. on our 2N the crank rode just fine with the handle to the rear and the rest of it laying between the manifold and head...

Just sayin'.....

here's the 8n crank storage. I've also seen them riding along the case at the end of the trans on 2n/9n. The one for my 2n is stored in my truck box, cause you never know when you're going to need it.
