battery drain

My 8n started draining the battery. Charged the battery up and disconnected the ground and the battery stays charged, Can't see any shorts in wires. Alternator is brand new. Where would I begin to look. Solenoid, condenser, switch, switch converted to key. This problems just started occurring

here are so few wires/connections on these old tractors compared to miles of wire & thousands of connections in a modern automobile, that it is really not difficult at all to find the 'leak'. Depending on the size of the 'leak' , you can remove a battery cable and insert a small lamp between the cable & battery post, or if 'leak' too small to light the lamp, insert an ammeter capable of reading the 'leak' current. Then one by one, disconnect items such as alternator, ign, light switch, solenoid, etc. one wire at a time until the light goes out or ammeter stops indicating a current. At that point, you have found your 'leak'/drain.

jmor gave you the foolproof method.

test lamp between cable and ground post.

.. places i would check are coil connection and genny cutout or alternator charge post/excite tab first.

Mine started doing the same thing so I installed a "no tools needed" cable end on the negative battery post-i disconnect it when it will be sitting un-used..Note: did the test as described and it showed that the alternator was draining it--alternator is working fine otherwise so I was not going to replace it..
