Anyone like to sell a spare front mount 8N 3 wire generator

Looking for a front mount 3 wire preferably 20 amp.later model

The outfit who tested my generator said that the armature is DOA and just not repairable. Grounding out from the inside.
He tried but couldn't find a replacement and or parts.

Ebay has a few that are beat to heck that look like paper weights. A few of the tractor sites have the 2 brush 3 wire 20 amp going for $250 or better.

Let me know if you have one that you would like to sell.
Thanks

I possibly have one..I'll have to check and make sure its a 3 wire. Wont be at the tractors again till Saturday morning. If I do I can ship it off Saturday

I have a couple I think, not sure of the amperage though.
Help me out. How can I tell them apart on the bench?

The way is has been explained to me by JMOR and a few other members, and alot of research, is that they are the 2 brush without the adjusting screw in the rear (8N10000B) which are basically 20 amp models. The ones with the adjusting screw that were modified from 3 to 2 brush are the smaller 11 amp genny's. If they were not modified then they use a cutout instead of a VR which would not work for me.

Forgot to add that I need the front mount type that has the smaller 2 screw bracket in the middle of the genny case.

Looks like the following pict:

Thanks..With all do respect "LisaK" responded first and I do owe her the opportunity to make the sale first. I hope that, if LisaK does not have anything that I can use perhaps I can reach out to you.
Thanks

Sounds like it is a good time to go 12 volts!

No more than what I run mine, not having a working generator is no big deal. When I park them I hook up a charger. only use them for a hour or so at a time!

I have been playing the recharge game for a few months now and is getting old. So I figured on trying to get it fixed right.

Want to keep it 6 volt original.
Since I have worked on many Pontiac engines in the past I have a a box full of alternators that I can use but just prefer that orginal look.

No problem with that at all! :)
I don't normally sell parts per se, but when someone asks
I'll take a look and see if I have a spare laying around.
It doesn't look like I have the one you're looking for though.
If I'm understanding correctly, this would be the 11 amp.

lose, but ALL 8Ns used a VR, none used a cut out. Yes, even those with the 3rd brush, modified or not.

Yes that would be the 11 amp. Would you know if that was changed over to 2 brush?
By the angle of the pict I can't tell how it mounts
In a pinch the 11 amp will work also.

JMOR thanks for the clarification.

Sorry the pic sucks....I had to take a pic off my laptop...is this the one? This was in the one I just sold but very possibly that's what's on the other 8n and I have a few others to check

Lisa yes it does look like the one I have pictured above in this thread having a center bracket and a bracket on the pulley end and there is no adjusting screw on the rear

Perfect ill actually be out there tomorrow night to get the trailer cause we're re Masonite siding my mother in laws garage wall and installing a new window Saturday so I'll have a look and snap a pic and post on here or give me a call 218-791-8067 I can get it shipped sat morning before I leave town if I have the correct one.

address.

Just had one rebuilt. New armature and fields as well as regulator, got needed parts in 2 days. Cost $180 but it is better than new and local genny shop that did the work will back it for as long as I own it. Pricy, but isn"t everything nowadays?

Guess its a geographical thing. My genny shop said he really had no parts and hard for him to get any. He commented that its been over 25 years since one of these came into his shop and he probably had something thrown around somewhere but would take him a year and a day to find it and who knows if it would work.

I rebuilt many alternators in my time but never a genertaor.

I could probably get a field winding as they are more common. But i wouldn't know where to start with an armature.

I hope I can get by with the help of a few member's on this site.

I have it package up in a medium flat rate box will ship in early morning and send you the info. Thanks!

My generator looks just like the one that you posted a picture of. I'm not understanding the wiring diagram in my book. I have a A and a F stamped on my generator with a wire in the back that is unstamped. What my book shows is the armature wire is in the back, but a A stamp is on the side. What my book also shows is that the ground is what I thought was the field and the field is what I thought was the ground. Can you help me get this straightened out? When I took my generator apart to check the brushes, I noticed that where the F is stamped on the case...there is nothing. Just the stud (bolt). The one in the back with no stamp, goes to the brushes. The one with the A goes to the windings in the case. Is it wired wrong? It is a 6 volt positive ground system, just like yours.

Royce I appreciate you looking and offering up a genny for sale. Seems like Lisa had one that I can use.
Thanks Much
Sorry for the delay in reply, I must have been sleeping! LOL
No problem at all. I hope it all works out well! :)

I may be way off but it sounds that you have a genny that may have been converted from a 3 brush to a 2 brush as ford did back in the early 50's. Or a genny that was re build from a few different donor genny's.
The wire on the rear should be your armature. The stud that has nothing connected to it internally should be your grd, to verify check to see if it has continuity when when placing ohm meter accross the stud and the generators case.
The last stud would be your field.

Does the genny work? Or are you trying to troubleshoot it ? If it is working, the rear stud should have about 7 volts accross it referenced to grd.

The generator has fried points, coil, voltage regulator, and battery. This was my Dad's tractor and has been wired wrong for a long time. I appreciate your help with this type of generator. Getting ready to make the switch  Thank you.

Big Thanks to Lisa K who was able to get a generator out to me practically overnight. Now charging like a champ.

Thanks Lisa - Let me know when you come in to NYC
