Starter Solenoid

I'm very pleased with myself. I was tinkering around with the 8N this weekend installed a new OP gauge and starter solenoid. I decided to mess with the oem starter switch that hasn't worked or been hooked up since I've had the tractor. Turns out after I got all the paint off that the PO mopped on, it works!! So, the new OP gauge shows about the same as the old one did, but doesn't bounce around with vibrations, and shows a little less than 1 psi per 100 rpms. That's to say I'm getting about 14 psi at 1550 rpms. Right on the line of what's safe from what I've read.

My question is what holds the solenoid on top of the starter for you guys? Is it the copper"L" from the starter to the solenoid or are there suppose to be holes for it to mount on? I just have wires going from batt to solenoid to starter, so do I need the L bracket/conductor or can I use a small self tapping screw :?

If barrel does not have two tapped holes for solenoid mounting, then it is not an 8N starter.....probably 9N/2N. Hose clamp? Zip ties?

There should be a screw on each side of the solenoid that screw
into the starter barrel. As JMOR said, could have a 9N starter.
A big clamp might work, but I wouldn't just let it hang on the L.

I have one like that too. I used a solenoid off a hundred series
and relocated it under the hood. Still uses the same push button
neutral safety switch that was originally there.

Thanks guys. I'm gonna check again to make sure the holes aren't just filled with paint. Right now its bolted to a bracket on the side of the block and there's no reason it can't stay there, I just wanted it to be right.
