Water Pump Replacement Update

Remember? I have a new water pump that needs longer studs to fit? I didn't really want to pull the studs if I could get the right part so I tried to order another water pump.

OReilly listed a rebuild, so I thought I was set. Nope -- This one is obviously for a different engine.

Tried NAPA next. No rebuilds available from their vendor. They could order a new one from Georgia, but it would take a while and would cost four times as much as the one I already have. I was wondering if it would have the same problem as the one I already have.

I decided to bite the bullet and see if the studs would come out. Fifteen minutes later and I had all three removed with no real problems. One was a little hard to get the stud removal tool on, but not too bad. I don't think it would have been any easier if I had removed the hood and radiator first.

OReilly had the right studs in stock (they're packaged as carburetor studs in a pack of four). They are 5/16 as someone thought before.

A little more work and the new pump now fits fine. RTV says to let cure until tomorrow before filling. Guess we'll see then if it all works OK.

Should work out alright. Let us know how it goes.
Always amazes me when x company is 4x the price.

First chance to fire her up tonight. While filling the radiator with a hose (we're working on cleaning the system out by flushing it), my 17-year-old son managed to aim the hose right at the distributor. When we got to the starting step, it didn't want to fire. Two days later, no problem. Everything runs good now. Mowed for about an hour and a half.

I'm trying to learn to think faster than he can make mistakes.

I knew better than to hit the distributor with the water from the hose. I just didn't think fast enough to tell him to be careful not to do it.

That is the one I used. Worked good on two of the three. The third one was a little harder to get in place where it good do the job without hitting something, but once the stud broke loose, I was able to finish up with a locking pliers. That fit better.
